What would you say if I told you the best racing I've seen (the most entertaining at least) did not come from a human player, and in fact came from the AI? Call me a nutter perhaps? Let me give a brief run down on the race I just witnessed.
Run Down
Getting tired of using the Mustang online where I typically ended up running around the track in last place all on my lonesome while the only other 2 racers (typically in Clios and NSXs) sped off, I decided to take my 550 PP Mustang into an offline race for a little fun. It's a 259kw, 1401kg Mustang with my own tuning applied, and is in my eyes what the Mustang should have been from the start. I also ran on S3 tyres, and had pre-selected S3 tyres so I can only presume the whole field was also on S3 tyres. It was a 5 lap race at Suzuka, set on about 53 difficulty, a 16 car field naturally.
The Race
OK, I won't bore you with every move I witnessed (that'd bore me writing it anyway). I started in 8th place as usual. Just in front of me was a BMW M3, just behind a Ferrari 512 BB. The majority of the rest of the field was made up of typical Japanese sports cars like the RX-7 and 350Z, with some Elises, 135i's and what not in the mix too. As we started the race, it became apparent that I wouldn't be able to overtake the M3 easily, however, at the second corner of Degner, he was held up by the car in front and I was able to get him on the outside on the exit, a move that shocked myself to be honest. This left the 512 BB hot on the heels on the M3. They followed each other nose to tail through the 1st lap. By the 2nd lap, they started to overtake the cars in front, and amazingly kept trading places with each other, with numerous switch back moves and late braking on each other. This continued for these 2 cars for laps 3 and 4, a battle of epic proportions, all the while overtaking the other slower cars through the field. There was one Elise in the mix with them for a while who did a lot of dive bombing, but ultimately outbroke himself at turn 1 then lost pace with them after that. On the braking approach to Casio on lap 4 the 512 BB made a move up the inside and finally made it stick, impressive. At this point watching the replay, I realised there was an NSX Type R that had caught up to them, knowing that he wasn't from the top 10 on the starting grid I made a mental note to watch his replay next. I had taken the lead from the Evora in my Mustang on the start of lap 4, the Evora had started in 2nd and made quick work of the pole position Skyline. Knowing that there was an M3 and 512 BB somewhere behind me who would likely have had better pace in wide open space I pressed on hard. This cost me dearly on lap 5 at the exit of Degner where I lost considerable speed after running into the sand, and the persistent Evora who just kept at it with no mistakes passed me and I was not able to catch up. Now having seen these battles, I watched the replay once more, to see the NSX that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Toggling back through the grid I found him on the rolling start in 14th place! To watch his driving was like art (because in replay, seeing where the AI continuously hesitates is not as obvious). Immediately on the first corner he was attacking the WRX in front of him, and made it stick. For the next 5 laps it was watching absolute decimation, faking one side and overtaking the other, side by side through corners, weaving through traffic on the straights, it was highly entertaining. Had there been more laps I wouldn't have been suprised to see him get the M3 and 512BB.
So, what were the final positions and big movers?
Lotus Evora- 2nd -> 1st (And props to him for sticking it out to the end)
Me in the Mustang- 8th -> 2nd (My own fault for not winning)
Ferrari 512 BB- 9th -> 3rd (This old supercar showed the new M3 a thing or 2)
BMW M3- 7th -> 4th (A commendable effort if I do say so myself)
Honda NSX Type R- 14th -> 5th (9 postions in one 5 lap race, awesome)
The best part was there was hardly any contact, from the AI that is good. If you would like to see this replay yourself, let me know, I have it saved and I can upload it as a zip, and if you want the Mustang tune to do this kind of racing yourself, let me know and I will post it in TLD.
