Best split-screen racer?

What the hell is up with developers now-days not having 2 player split-screen racing? Heaven forbid inviting a friend over for a night of racing and socializing!

Anyway... so what game out now (or soon to be released) is the best for 2 players sitting in the same room? I can only think of a few that even offer this: Motorstorm 2, WipeoutHD, GT5P...?
 
Wipeout HD has great splitscreen. You can even race whole tournaments in split screen.
Gran Turismo is also good, but a little limited because of the nature of Gran Turismo, if your mate doesn't mind playing GT, no biggie, but some people don't really enjoy head to head races because the skill barrier is a major issue.

Developers don't feel they need to add split screen anymore because they feel the demographic for racing games prefers to play online than invite friends around.
 
WipeoutHD, absolutely. You can select horizontal or vertical split, and as Ardius said the tournament mode is an excellent addition.

I'd hate to see splitscreen action disappear from games. Is it that hard to program?
 
Its not really a case of it being hard to program, its just one less thing the developers have to create and test. Reducing the time to develop the game and the costs involved is a huge plus. As soon as a developer (or publisher) feels a game mode isn't particularly popular anymore, they'll easily axe it.
I think the biggest issue with split screen is the frame rate more than anything.
