Best surround headset for GT5/GT6?

They are no where near the best but I have a pear of Turtle Beach X11's. (X11's are the Xbox version, but surround gaming does work on PS3 and everything from chat to sound works on PC. P11's are for PS3) Sound is very good, makes many sounds in GT5 sound a little bit better. They're also very inexpensive compared to other headsets. They are also very reliable, I've had mine for three or so years now with absolutely no issues, and I haven't taken the best care of them either.

X/P11's might be a little harder to find as Turtle Beach has upgraded to the X/P12's. (Exact same thing, just different color) If you want to save money, these are great! 👍

Does it enhance experience compared to tv speakers?

^^^LOL hell yes, any surround headset will destroy TV speakers by orders of magnitude. Any decent surround headset *Not Stereo* from Astro, Tritton, Turtle Beac, will kill TV speakers 10 fold. Get a pair.

Sold! I went and got these for 70 in store from Fry's. I love that it's got an amp and I can use with my already good stereo headphones.
Nice! How are you liking them so far?

The setup took 40 minutes. Harder than I thought. I accidentally had df 5.1 selected. Found out that was mistake by searching online.

Once up and running, tracks like willow springs when driving really sound great with directional noise from road. I'm hearing a few engine sounds I didn't hear before.

It was work getting bass and volume to fit well. '14 Bette sounds even more gorgeous with headphones. Can't beat a great price for 5.1/7.1 and flexible for other uses.

Thanks for sending me the deal!

No problem! 👍

I suppose I should mention that I use a pair of Sennheiser HD 650 for PC right now. I haven't tried them with Gran Turismo 6 yet. Maybe I should do that first. I don't think I will get surround sound on GT6 with them though, since there is only a stereo jack connection (surround on PC is virtual through drivers for my Xonar card). For music they are amazing, though the bass could have been more pronounced.

Those of you who have tried both stereo and surround for GT6, is there a big difference in immersion and is it worth the money?

Actually the Turtle Beach Ear Force XP Seven seems to be the top dog now, and officially used by MLG: http://store.majorleaguegaming.com/products/ear-force-xp-seven. Has anyone tried that? Rather expensive it seems.

I want a headset with good, punchy deep and precise bass but not overpowering.

Oh!!.... Forget even talking about a gaming headset then. I haven't tried those exact Sennheisers, but they should wipe the floor with any gaming specific gear on offer. All you should really need to do is get your surround decoding sorted. A hundred odd dollars will get you the aforementioned Astro mixamp. Grab an optical cable and that's it. If you ever wanted to add a mic for chat, third party mics are also an option.

Do not buy the mixamp with the beveled edge knobs, they have a distortion issue.

Oh, I didn't realise I could get surround sound just by using such a peripheral. Will that give me surround on par with Astro 40 for instance, or XP seven? Do those headsets just have two speakers which produce the surround sound (virtually), or do they have several speakers within the headset that make the surround more realistic?

I already have a ModMic, so that part is taken care of (that is, if I can use it on the PS3).

Beveled edge knobs: Do you have an image, so I know better what you are referring to?

Thanks :)

Edit: Is this the one I should get? http://www.gamestate.co/no/astro-mixamp-usb (2013 Edition)

On par? Should be significantly better. It will be virtual, which gives superior sound to the multi-driver options.

The link you posted is for the 2013 edition. It is meant to ultimately have a firmware update to enable custom eqs. If this happens it will should be the best version. As it stands, I doubt you'd be disappointed anyway.

This: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Astr...ideo_Game_Headsets&hash=item1c2c050203&_uhb=1 is the beveled version. This: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Free-shi...ideo_Game_Headsets&hash=item19db37aca7&_uhb=1 is the non-beveled version. They are versions 1 and 2, with the 2013 being the third.

Ok, so just put the jack from the HD 650 into the Astro and the toslink from Astro into my PS3 and voila, I have surround?
Sweet :)
Looking forward to trying that in GT6.
