While in the process of upgrading some parts,(see new psu advice.) i want to put in a bit better processor. The one fitted at the moment is a Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20Ghz. Can i improve on it without breaking the bank managers heart, i have no idea of the price of the current procssor, as it came with the motherboard,so have no idea of what i need to pay to get better results.:dunce:

If I can help you with a price example: 20 days ago I paid 113'85 € (91'32 £) for my Intel Core 2 Duo E8400.

If your motherboard can support the new 45nm chips, go with a wofldale at or around the 3Ghz mark. The E8400 is a steal right now for about 170 USD. Im using an E7200 right now clocked at 3.53 Ghz, a 1Ghz overclock-or 40%, and it cost me 120 USD

It all depends what you are going to use it for.

Yes it does support Support Intel 45nm CPU, Using the pc for gaming, GTR2, RACE 07 etc, & everyday web browsing etc.👍

I got a Q6600 for $180 Canadian. Phenominal processor, but the apps I work with are optimized for multi-core processing. Like... i can convert a downloaded divx movie to mp4 format for my ipod in a fraction of the time it takes on my dual core 2.0ghz and my single core computers. By a fraction, i mean 15% of the time it takes my 2 ghz laptop to do it....but I think the encoder is 64 bit optimized :p

Have you tried overclocking your E4500 yet? I think you can play almost any recent game in decent conditions with it.

Just got my E8400 back, will install it in a couple of days and hopefully have a stable overclock around 3.8Ghz or higher...:)

Edit: Crap, really old thread.
