On 19th of this month, to get ahead of a change of isp, I was updating my contacts with my new gmail.
When I got to the ps5, I followed Sony's own on screen directions to update my legacy account email, an account at least 20yrs old, however, instead of just updating it, Sony's system inadvertently closed the account and opened a new one for the new email, with no access to the 3500hrs of GT7 progress that is the backbone of my growing youtube channel, now dead in the water.
I contacted the ironically titled "support" dept, to be told that the account doesn't exist, they can't find it.
I insisted.
They asked for the serial of my first console on the account, I photographed, copied/pasted for accuracy. They said it was wrong, I gave them the ps5 serial, wrong.
They asked for sony transaction id's for my last purchase, it was a free monthly game, why keep that?
I offered them 10yrs of paypal interactions with them, rejected.
I then told them to be sure and gave them online id and sign in id.
They were away for a few minutes, and returned to tell me they had found the account.
Relieved, I asked for a manual recovery link, they refused, telling me it was no longer secure or verified, so couldn't be used, "for my security."
Then, on the 22nd, I find a marketing email from Sony, to gaznazdiak, my online ID for 20yrs, at the email address they refused to use to help me recover from THIER mistake.
Today, I received 3 more emails, from Sony, to gaznazdiak, at my sign in ID address, 2 more marketing of stuff they've cut off my access to, but the kicker for me, was from the billing department, telling me that when the subscription I renewed 2 months ago runs out next year, it will cost me more to have no access to what is legally mine.
On the serial numbers, embarrassingly, it has only just occurred to me; if they couldn't find the account, how did they know the serials were wrong?
Proof they lied to me to get rid of me.
To be perfectly clear, Sony did not cause this problem deliberately, it was simply a database error.
However, their corporate response as delivered by their "support" department, was, and continues to be, a deliberate and egregious abuse of the asymmetric power dynamic they create over their customers.
This is to warn members to be aware of this risk to their own data, and ask if you can spread the word, tag sony on X, Reddit etc.
If they can do it to me they can do it to you
