With BioShock only just landed across the pond, I guess it is still too early for the BioShock Causes Red Ring of Death accusations to start flying just yet (but they will, mark my words). However one unlucky gamer appears to have lost his entire PC in a bout of BioShock overload.

In a post on NeoGaf that rapidly spiralled into internet phenomenon status, forum user Epiphyte describes in detail how his PC made a rapid and explosive ascendancy to silicon heaven right in the midst of trying out the BioShock demo.

"For about half a second I sit there stunned. The first thought in my mind is "Amazing, that is the greatest effect I've ever seen. They should have given this game an 11." Immediately following this a sickening realization dawns on me as I look over at my tower. Blue Smoke! The magic blue smoke that makes electronics work is escaping from my PC," he writes.

It’s a brilliantly written post so I urge to go read the original. Mercifully this is probably not a symptom that is too likely to manifest itself in many other PCs – but it might be worth checking his machine specs out in case you need to think seriously about investing in a fire extinguisher.

But I like one of his replies:

I think the game exceeded the awesomeness threshold of your capacitors.

Well, Flux Capacitors are only rated for 1.21 gigawatts

Thanks for alerting people, I have also edited my post to alert people.

Well I can run it on max on my PC. No burning smells either.

40 (at the lowest) to 70 FPS on my PC with everything turned up. :p Bwahaha!

I'm decently confident that my PC will either melt or simply vaporize if I even think about firing up that stuff on me olde rig.

Since this is the unofficial official thread for this game, I have to say, so far so good.

I'm running it on a Vista 32-bit, X2 4800+ with 2gb Ram, SATA Raid, and a single 8800GTX, 1024mb video card. So far I am able to run it smooth, guessing 45-60 FPS at 1600x1200, everything one except "Force World Lighting". The graphics are great. A real pleasure to see some DX10 technology at work. I'm only about an hour into the game, but the water, lighting, fire, smoke, textures....are all major eye candy and the game play so far seems to be just good 'ole fun. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the puzzle element in 'hacking' different devices, but it's actually kind of fun and strays away from annoying as most puzzles do in games like this. My most memorable event so far would be when the plane crashes into the connecting bridge tube and the water starts rushing through the tube as you follow to the nearest exit. My most "ew that's sick" moment was when the little girl was stabbing (I think she was actually sucking bio material) a dudes head. The sound was squishy and wet sounding.... It was about that time I heard my wife say, "nice game hun", in her ever so pleasant sarcastic voice.

Pako: I think your CPU is probably holding you back. I'm running the game at 1920x1200 full including forced world lighting with about the same FPS as you (Vsynced, so it never goes above 60). I'm running with a 2900XT which in some cases is a little better than the 8800GTX, but is usually trialling a little.

The game itself is absolutely wonderful.. Graphics, sound, gameplay action, storyline.. The game also has that 'X' factor you hear gamers talking about - It's just fun to play.

A little late responding, but yeah. I now have everyting turned up, with 1600x1200 being my limit due to my monitor. No lag so far and still playings great!

My CPU is definitely my bottle neck at this point. For what it's worth, my 3dMark scores with the single 8800GTX is just 50-80 points less than my Dual X1900XT Crossfire setup. Pretty dang good for a single card I think.
