Now that bird flu is moving like a bat out of hell through eastern europe, what do you think about this latest epidemic? Do you think that we will all die, or will just get a little quesey and none of us will die? Post your views here...

A lot of people will die.. The old and the weak will go first. I believe most young and healthy people will get over it - might be a little harder than your regular flu, but nothing more... Something resembling the plague - naahhh.. I doubt it...

I'm not cancelling my vacation to Turkey come may...
 
May be a better topic for the opinions board, but I think we already have a thread on this over there. If not, we needed one.

Anyway the bird flu is no biggie.
 
I don't know. But people have already died. They are about to stop the epidemi, or atleast what I heard.
 
Why can't we just shoot every single bird in the world? :trouble:

Well, if someone would teach kids not to play with dead birds they wouldn't get sick in the first place. The people in Asia were mostly poor, living in squalor and many were bird farmers, some who actually slept inside the coop with the birds. If you don't get bird flu you are bound to catch something due to the bird poo.

Besides the virus has yet to mutate and then and only then will I worry about it. If we start getting cases here in the US from birds then I will take down my bird feeders and be done with it.


For those who don't remember this has been threatening to kill us all since the mid 90s, possibly earlier. The difference today is that we have bigger news coverage.

You are not alone.

When it comes to bird flu you have four classes of people.
  1. People like you that are afraid it could be catastrophic.
  2. People like me that doubt it will do more than minor damage in technologically advanced regions if it even mutates at all.
  3. People like my brother that think it will be a pandemic, but we will control it quickly.
  4. People that just don't care.

The question is, who will be right? Hopefully me.

I look at it this way: Until it mutates we can not create a vaccine or any medicines designed to stop it because we won't know exactly what to prepare for beforehand. So, until it does mutate, if it does, there is nothing to be done other than to not go around handling birds in unsanitary ways. The WHO and the NIH are there to watch it for us and send up an alarm if needed. Until then I will just go on like it isn't there because as far as I am concerned it isn't a threat.
 
All this coverage is a load of hot air.

What's more, the Ministry of Health is leaflet-dropping all households here to say how to protect from bird flu and what to do when an epidemic strikes.

In bloody New Zealand! Bird flu is heading west! In the northern hemisphere!

Since when has the bird flu shown signs of going south and east???
 
If it mutates everyone will just have a more severe than normal flu. Take some night nurse and sleep it off. Will probbaly kill quite a few old people and babies like a normal flu does all the time. Wonder how aids sufferes will cope.

I for one am ready for the looting and extortion.

I put it in the same category with West Nile, SARS, and AIDS. The "I don't care" category.

Now cancer on the otherhand... that I care about.

This is going to sound heartless and cruel, but I don't mean for it to be.

It might be a form of cleansing. Those with AIDS have an immunodeficiency. A pandemic type flu would wreak havoc on those kinds of people, including cancer patients, heart patients (me), old and young people. Transmissable immunodeficiency diseases, such as AIDS/HIV, would suffer a huge setback when many of the host bodies are killed.

It is like a new predator coming in and wiping out food supplies and thus causing all other predators in the area to starve to death, nearly wiping out the population.

Or I could just be talking out of my butt, which I have been known to do.

Don't forget heart disease. It kills more people than all forms of cancer, something most people forget.

For me when discussing disease there is no such thing as cruel unless you use it to make fun of someone or use it to try and make them into a second-class.

Unless it is genetic or a defect, as is my case. My doctor described my situation as being cursed with Chinese Water Torture. Be healthy and hope the next "complication" doesn't kill you.

I will agree that cancer is very bleak, but there are great strides to stopping it. I figure that it won't be truly "cured" until we can create genetic treatments, since it really is your DNA mutating and creating worthless cells.
