I have a really big question to ask, how do you permanently block a program from either installing or accessing the web?... or both? is it possible? Because I have a huge problem of my family coming over and their kids tend do huddle over the PC and install all kinds of Shoes! (in place for expletive). Any help would be great!

If you have XP or Vista you can create a "Guest" user account that has limited access, including the inability to install anything. This is easy to do.

However, if you want to get really in-depth, you can even prevent them from being able to right-click or do any number of other things by fiddling with some settings in the registry.

how would that be done? the registry part?

Just make a guest account... my dad made one and it's annoying the hell out of me. I can't install Limewire or anything... but they can still download stuff, which might be a problem if they download explicit music or pr0n..

yea thats the thing, I really don't want to make a guest account, they don't come here often, but it just would be nice to be worry free when they DO come.

But it's really quite simple.. just go to the control panel and check or uncheck it. It's probably the easiest thing to do.

You can install something like websense that blocks access to a list of sites you define, or vice versa only allows access to those sites. There's lots of them out there - just google internet filtering and you'll find a whole bunch :). That's if you want them to have access to the internet in the first place - the easiest thing to do is to just hide the modem or take away the ethernet cable.

It's probably more in-depth than you'd like to do. You have to go into RegEdit and create a registry key for each function disabled.
I think you can do what you're trying to more easily by manipulation of the Group Policy.

It sets all the registry settings based on the boxes you check/uncheck.

Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc

WARNING: Can render your computer useless to all if you don't know what you're doing!

But it's probably too advanced for this example.

I suggest Guest account and removal of Ethernet cable as easiest options. :)

That's probably it. I have no experience in setting it, only trying to get around it (computer at my job). ;)
