Blow off valves legal in Australia as of 2005?

A friend of mine told me that since the beginning of the new year blow off valves and pod/mushroom filters are now legal. Can anyone verify this? It does however make sense because a friend of mine was pulled over by the cops and got a canary because his exhaust was too loud, ride height too low and some other tyre associated problem. They didnt even ask him to open the bonnet like they normally would.

BOV's were only legal here if they were factory fitted. Subaru offered factory bov's to anyone who purchased a WRX as an option. Bov's considered illegal would have been those installed by anyone but a dealer i.e Autobarn installing a Blitz BOV to a Skyline. I guess the Police couldn't be stuffed chasing around people with mods when there are drug dealers and stuff out there.

To my knowlage, BOV's have always been defectable. It depends on the copper whether of not you get a defect. BOV's supposedly dump polluted air into the atmosphere.

Yes they are fitted to cars, but I guess like you said stock BOVs are legal. Although fitted ones aren't.

Apparently it's because they're too loud. Which is total crap, considering how loud trucks are when their BOVs go off.

There's also the fact that I think GT Wings are illegal, because they're hazardous-sticking out and all. Which is also crap, because a long piece of timber stuck to a utes roof is more dangerous than a GT Wing.

Other than those things, I don't know much else about the legalisation of BOVs.

do you really think they are going to say holy moly thats one loud B.O.V. call in the choppers! sometimes i dont even know what im talking about anymore......but anyways most stock B.O.V.s are ok if your going to take it easy. since when were blow off valves that loud? the 3" pipes usually drowns that out

I have seen so many Widebody S15's in Melbourne that have had their look ruined because a cop told the driver to remove the wing. It's completely rediculous and your right, those utes with all that metal are more dangerous. There are no guns in Australia so the Police don't have much to do like in America.

What do you mean no guns in Australia? There is lots of guns in Aus, you would be suprised.

You know what I mean. I dont hear of many shooting deaths in Australia. The only incidents involving guns are when the Police shoot a crazy drunk/doped up guy who's threatening police with a knife.

Yes, because the large majority of people that own firearms in Australia are responsible people.

I see cops driving slowly through car parks down the beach looking to make a defect or an excuse to hand out fines. I got an Undue noise fine for my bov and he was going to defect me but I played nice guy so he let me go.

Motorists are badly picked on by police in Australia, but if your car is stolen they dont care.

Wow that makes me not want to live in aus. I thought it would be amazing cause I could get a skyline or a muscle car. That sucks.

you guys have you "BOV" info kinda screwy. I don't live in Aus. so i'm not sure what the law is on aftermarket parts, so...... But the only time you really hear a loud BOV is when it is a atmospheric BOV. No factory BOV is vented it's recycled making it just a part on the car you don't even know exists unless you like messing with cars. Anyway i can't imagine a law that prevents you from having a aftermarket BOV that is not a atmospheric one. FYI atmospheric BOV's 99.9% of the time just make your car run really rich. Some cars will die at idle because so much fuel is being left over because the air fuel ratio is screwed up by the atmospheric bov's. I have learned all this when i bought one without knowing about it. The part sits in my garage and collects dust. Thats what it does best. LOUD BOV'S = RICE they are not fuctional usually.

My blow off valve is stock and yes it does recycle back into the intake, BUT it goes back into the intake just behind the mass airfow meter which I have a HKS pod filter stuck too, which inturn makes the blow off noise very loud from the intake. Also my intake noise (sucking) is very loud from this fliter. This is one example of a loud factory bov, Skylines with factory airboxes dont have this problem.

As for cops, they in Australia dont need to try to figure out if its stock plumb back or aftermarket vented, they just defect you anyway, cops dont need reason, If they suspect somethings not legal then they can defect.

I have a Blitz supersonic BOV on my R33. I attached the little pod filter that you get with the whole package. It filters the atmospheric gases and makes the BOV far more quiet and hence more 'stealthy'. I have also noticed that you are more likely to get a defect sticker depending on what area you live in. I live in a resonably expensive suburb so the cops are a bit more focused on drink driving than modified cars. If you venture out to the crappy suburbs where burnout marks are plentiful on each intersection, the cops main objective is to hunt modified cars. Even in those areas if you drive slowly the cops will just stare you down...just waiting for a pssshhh...
