Hoping someone can help here, i've had my 120GB slim for about 18 months now, I have a ton of downloaded PSN and PS+ games, not all that many disc based games but I do play GT5 a lot, not daily but a few times a week.
Some time ago (but when I was already out of warranty) I noticed the PS3 was having some issues with reading the GT5 disc (and any other disc-based games i've played since). Sometimes the disc won't be recognised at all, other times the game will freeze during loading at some point, in rare cases i'll be in the game and will change the car or something and it will seem to freeze, unable to load the pic of the car in the garage for example.
The things I have noticed are:
1. Often, when I first switch the PS3 on, it won't show the game disc at all in the XMB. This is sometimes remedied by rebooting the console, or ejecting the disc and putting it back in, but is usually followed by loading issues.
2. Things seems to work better when the console has been on a while and "warmed up"
3. Other symptoms, the PS3 will make a short clattering sound which seems like it's resetting the carriage the disc sits in, or something similar, when I start it up or restart it.
4. Even when the disc is recognised, loading issues will occur. I can usually hear the drive whirr as the disc starts spinning, then "bzzt" it stops, then spools up again, "bzzt" again etc. Things then either freeze, or a generic PS3 error message appears (more so with games other than GT5) or in some cases, the system crashes with several quick beeps.
5. Once things seem to be working OK, it usually stays fine for that gaming session.
So based on that, what are the possible causes? I don't think any parts of the drive are worn out as it happened not long into the console's life, and I don't really thrash it, i'm pretty leisurely with my gaming. Can the Blu-Ray drive lazer or lens or whatnot go out of alignment, as is the case with CD players and presumably DVD players (though i've only experienced it with CDs)?
Also are there ways of cleaning the drive? I could of course look this up, but any recommendations here would be welcome. I do of course always make sure the disc is clean and free of fingerprints etc.
Only other thing i considered is that, when the room has been cold, that very minor condensation is forming somewhere inside and causing read errors, but this would evaporate once the PS3 has been on a while. I've occasionally noticed odd linear residue/smudging on the disc when i've ejected it (similar to how it mists up when you breathe on the surface), but i've never had such problems with my PS2, xbox etc.
Any diagnoses or suggestions welcome!
