Blu-Ray Showing Potential

Well, from the looks of things, the following games won't fit on HD-DVD or DVD9:

MGS4
Resistance

And a ton of other games are getting extras once they hit the PS3, be it more content, more extras, or sharper textures.

What are your thoughts on the potential of Blu-Ray in the PS3? A lot of people have frowned upon it, but I think personally it will allow games to expand greatly upon what they already have.

For instance, imagine playing GTA, a seemingly beloved franchise. Now imagine that every time you did something, like broke the law, finished a mission, etc, you'd hear a news story about it, tons of them to go along with the actual gameplay. Or imagine that you could watch the news story's on TV. Fact is, on DVD9, this would require multiple discs, and would require you to implement linear gameplay, so as to avoid news story a being on disc b, and you're playing on disc a.

Ideas? Opinions?

Agreed, bluray is a must for next generation gaming, more space = more features and better gameplay. It already annoys me when installing a program that comes with multi dics on my PC, therefore I don't think i am gonna enjoy replacing the disc in the middle of gameplay.

Yeah i'd have to say that its a bit silly for ppl to blatently dismiss the facts of computing when thinking "next gen". More space is always a massive demand. And at many times the size of HD-DVD then i can't see why ppl should bother making baby side-steps. Let current tech run a little longer and create something that is a decent upgrade. Blu-Ray. Plus refine it so its more useable, stable etc.

Blu-ray, whether it succeeds in the movie marketplace or not, will be beneficial for video games. Simple as that. Sure, if HD-DVD wins, Sony will lose the sales from the people who buy the PS3 for movies, but the video games will greatly benefit it.

The multi-platform games are what I'm interested in for extra content. If it's just slightly better graphics, it's not going to make me want a PS3, or make me even want to buy the PS3 version because of online play (I have a gut feeling the PS3 online will be lacking). But if there's extra content, like extra maps or good bonus levels, then I'd be more interested in the PS3. But I honestly doubt it would happen.

yeah good points there. I am thinking the same. This is Sony after all. Classic example: PSP. They have such a BRILLIANT idea doubled with a brilliant bit of hardware, only to miss the ball by a country mile because they are so anal about letting ppl have control (homebrew etc) or leaving out abilities that would make it even more useful. Servearly limiting its potential. I hope they wake up to themselves soon, especially with this PS3. But i fear they wont.

since we are on GTP...

gran turismo 4 almost didn´t fit in a DVD... no way GT5 can fit in a DVD. i might even use a dual layer blu-ray, since a game like resistence already got to 22 gigs..

so end of story for me:)

The reason the limit what you can do is because no matter what anyone say's with their "homebrew" they're just looking to pirate things anyway. Why is it so "wrong" for a company to want to STOP people from stealing from them? WHere is your logic?

Duck: Just give it a year or two, you'll start seeing the difference between a game on 360 and a game on PS3, for both content and quality. I has a strong feeling the PS3 will edge out greatly when it comes to overall content.

The 360, however, will more than likely rely heavily on episodic content and downloadable extras...which of course you'll have to buy...

Uhh....where have you been the last two years? Most games use in game sequencing for cutscenes, meaning they take up little space. So more, or less space, isn't going to effect the amount or duration of cutscenes, that's up to the developer and geared toward the type of game you play.

If you're playing MGS, you KNOW it's going to be cutscene heavy.

If you're playing FF, you KNOW it's going to be cutscene heavy.

If you're playing Virtua Fighter, you KNOW it's NOT going to be cutscene heavy.

Come on, put two and two together :P ANd games on CD would be foolish.

More space by no means whatsoever means better features/better gameplay.

However it does give developers the oppurtunity to add more to the game...

The main problem of course is that people believe that Developers should have to fill up the BluRay disc with content for a game... if this is true then games will go down hill.

Only the very latest PS2/Xbox/PC games are coming out on DVD9's these days which means that space isn't a massive premium for the PS2.

Having said that though with the higher res textures/maps/areas etc that will be made available for next gen I do believe that DVD9 will not be enough for games that will be made in about 3 years time... all games that will be out for the next couple of years will probably be either a) small enough to fit on DVD9 or b) too full of meaningless rubbish that most of us skip through.

While it doesn't mean more or better gameplay, it certainly does offer up a more immersive experience. More audio (uncompressed btw) more variety in texture, larger maps with fewer repeating textures, etc.

Space isn't a "commodity" right now, because the hardware available wouldn't be able to take advantage of it anyway, it's too limited to process amounts of information like that.

Comparing current generation technology (i.e. DVD9 and Xbox, PS2) is very difficult when talking about next generation technology (360, PS3). THe main problem with the 360, is that it *can* handle more variety and higher audio bit rates, etc etc, the problem is it doesnt' have all the space to store that without using compression. Compression requires more CPU and GPU cycles that could otherwise be dedicated to other things.

Im all for BD and its wealth of greatness that it can bring to games. I just hope that mutiplatform games for the 360,Wii and PS3 dont get comprimised due to the latter two systems not havibng a next-gen optical format.

Blue Ray I think has great potential as long as it is no to expensive in the long run. Whether you really need such a huge amount of space is questionable but it is always good to have it there regardless. It also can encourage game makers to use all of the available space which can lead to extra features, missions etc etc... they are no longer limited and they wont have to cut things out like some games on consoles have had to suffer.

Sony have many a time got it right big time in history with the transistor radio, trinitron colour tv and the walkman but they have also got it horribly wrong with betamax, pushing portable cd players and mini disk when mp3 took over and not jumping onto the LCD tv bandwagon early...... its really a gamble, so far the ps3 price makes it abit hard to see how they can win the world over but a billion dollar corperation is not stupid..... they will surely (hopefully) know what they are doing......

I don't know where you heared that, but people have ripped GT4 disks and the disk was a little over half full. GT4 could have had a hell of a lot more on the disk, the problem with using the same media for a next gen game is as the models get higher in polycout, as the sounds get richer and better quality ect, the files get larger. So as an example, 100 fully modelled cars in GT1 may take up 20mb, 100 fully modelled cars in GT3 would take up say 200mb, 100 cars in GT5 might take up 2gb, this is dues to the higher res texture, higher poly models and so on. The bottom line is though the jump in storage space from DVD to BD is very large, so games designed specially for the PS3 will likely show this when compared to DVD and HD-DVD games.
