The BMW 3 Series was voted the 2006 “World Car of the Year.” The multiple-award winning 2006 BMW 3 Series received its latest kudos in an awards ceremony held in conjunction with the New York International Automobile Show.

“World Car of the Year” awards are voted on by an independent panel of automotive journalists from all around the globe. From an initial field of 27 contenders the 2006 3 Series was selected as one of three finalists before being declared this year’s winner. “World Car of the Year” contenders must be available in most markets of the world and are judged on style, performance, handling, comfort and utility. Entrants were also judged for value, safety, environmental responsibility and significance.

Driving enthusiasts around the world have considered the BMW 3 Series to be an icon for its unique combination of these attributes. It is the quintessential luxury sports sedan. It is now available with xDrive all-wheel drive in two Sedans and one Sports Wagon model in the US. The aluminum/magnesium inline six-cylinder engine with Valvetronic technology reduces weight while at the same time improving both performance and fuel efficiency. The advanced Dynamic Stability Control system includes features such as Brake Drying, Brake Standby Brake Fade Compensation, Start-off Assistant, and Comfort Stop. The outstanding value of the BMW Series is enhanced by outstanding residual values and free scheduled maintenance for four years or 50,000 miles.

“We are delighted to receive this recognition for the 3 Series,” said Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO of BMW of North America. “The BMW 3 Series is the true embodiment of a world car. Designed and engineered in Germany, it is built on two continents and sold in approximately 140 markets worldwide. It is available in four different body styles, everything from a Sedan and Sports Wagon to a Coupe and Convertible. It is available with a wide variety of engines ranging from four-cylinder diesels to high performance six-cylinders.”

It seems like such a nice car. It's a shame many people will just buy it for the badge.

My choice for WCOTY would have been the new A-Class. Leaps and bounds better than it's predecessor.

Yeah but still not as good as other small car's.

It's no suprise the BMW 3-series has won it, it does what it does better than anything else.

That's why BMW can charge whatever they want for it and people will buy it.

Yes, regarding the given criteria, I couldn't name a better car for the job. I only wish it would look prettier. From the drivers point of view, I'd buy one, but I find all the later BMWs so ugly that I won't. It's a shame! :indiff:

They're slighty more expensive the equivelent Vovlo or a VW, but they're the better car.

Look at the 1-series, it's a lot more expensive and if I recall this correctly Top Gear pointed out how overpriced it is because of the name.

BMW's arent even all that expensive and you americans are getting bargains compared to us europeans. They can charge the amount they do however because they are good, and some people will only buy it for the badge as over the years of making brilliant cars its got itself in that favourable position.

I did a comparison of some kind of same-classed cars with comparable extras the other day:

Alfa Romeo Brera: 42.390€
Audi A3 3.2 Quattro: 36.820€
BMW 130i: 37.890€
VW Golf R32: 33.505€

Okay, if you take the Brera out (cause it doesn't fit properly), the BMW is the most expensive one, but it's not that bad, is it?

I'm just going on what your guy's beloved Top Gear said about the car. But I do believe myself BMW's are overpriced for what they are...hell most cars are overpriced.

The model of the 1-series they tested is overpriced, yes, it was the top spec performance version available at that time and wasn't much cheaper than an Impreza. But 1-series prices start at £15k the Alfa 147 starts at £14k and the Audi A3 starts at £15k like the BMW so they are generally competitive. It's just certain models towards the top spec end of the model range tend to get pricey but you can say the same thing for the 147 GTA and the A3 quattro V6.

since when do you trust top gear? and since when has top gear become a source of proper information?

I personally hate Top Gear, however it's seems around here it's pretty heavily respected.

Then why do people go on about "because Jeremey said so" around here? You people really need to pick a solid base of thinking around here. I can't tell you how many times people say...

"The car is rubbish because Jeremey said so on Top Gear." If the guys on Top Gear aren't so brilliant, then I don't want to hear them used in any form of a conversasion.

Well, the guys from Top Gear do tell the truth when they talk about the feel they get from driving a certain car, at least in most of the tests. When it comes to facts however, they, and especially Jeremy, like to go over the top a little (too much), to make it sound more spectacular. That makes Top Gear a valid source of information, as long as you pick the right one.

We only do that when people say that JC hates US car's and we point out all the positive things he has actually said about them. No one say's car a is better than b because Jeremey says so and if you insist they do I'll have to ask for proof and I'm not talking abou t a comment like every review of this car say's this about it so it must be true and using TopGear as an example, I'm talking about what you actually said, JC say's this car's good, so it's good. We do use the power laps as a track performance indicator, but that's not a car review. We like TopGear, it's entertaining and does bring out some good points on a car, but would I use TopGear (the TV show not the mag) to help influence a purchase I would make, no. Tid bit's of info about a car that the TopGear presenters say is good useful info, like Hammond saying that Marcos was a bit cramped, even for him, he's a small guy. The final opinion is often down to preference, so regarless of it being in a mag, TV show or from a friend, what they think doesn't represent what you will or what you should think. Never has, never should do.

Overprized car. Here in Germany the prize is totally ridiculous. It's simply not worth the money imo. But whatever...

BMW and the 3-series deserve it. :sly: Excellent job. :) 👍 👍

The 1-series is overpriced (perhaps because it cost more than it should have to engineer it...?), yes. But the 3-series is hardly stratospheric compared to its rivals, and you get what you pay for (as demonstrated by this award, here).

@Blazin: Anyone who uses Jeremy Clarkson's opinions as factual evidence is an idiot. Anyone who quotes Jeremy Clarkson to make a point or joke about a car is watching the show properly.

He does come up with a lot of accurate fact's, it's his opinions and anyone who bases thiers soley on thoes that I'd worry about. Ofcourse if he say's the Veyron handles superbly, then the EVO review say's the same thing and then AutoCar say's the same thing etc, I'm going to assume that the Veyron handles superbly. But to base something on one persons opinion when you haven't had the experience is stupid anytime, unless there is literally only one persons opinion to go by, then it's not as stupid since you have nothing else to go on but still not alway's smart either.
