BMW M135i Concept: Bimmer Got Back

Ain't no fruit sweeter than a forbidden one. Just ask Eve. Fans in the United States get a plethora of BMW 1 Sseries products, including a convertible and the delightful 1M Coupe. They should be content, but then BMW drops this. It's the BMW M135i three-door hatch concept and the yearning begins yet again. Damn you, BMW!

Because it's still a "concept", BMW's content to skimp on the details — this despite everyone and their mother claiming it's a done deal. What we know is this is proof that someone, somewhere inside BMW thinks that taking the popular European hatchback version of the 1 Series and M-fying is a good idea. Probably the same person who still misses the "clownshoe" BMW M Coupe.

BMW starts with the 1 Series three-door hatch and adds a straight-six gasoline engine with a pair of turbos and power output pegged at 300 horsepower (no displacement info is given, but this sounds similar to the N54 3.0-liter). Then they throw in a mix of M-developed suspensions upgrades.

Next comes the M sports braking system and light 18-inch M alloys. To make it look M-ish there are giant intakes upfront and a darkly painted rear apron that screams DTM, to those who know what DTM is. Oh, and lots of swoopy tri-color M paint.

There are a lot of hints from BMW that indicate what we've been repeating from other, more BMW-centric outlets — this is more than just a space filler at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

Here's a key bit from the press release:

Thanks to a distinctively sports-oriented appearance, the BMW Concept M135i offers attractive prospects for the further development of the BMW 1 Series model range. At the same time, a clear signal has been given for the expansion of the new product category of BMW M Performance automobiles.

Unfortunately, nowhere in the press release do I see the worlds "Baseball," "Jesus," "Willie Nelson," or "extra-wide seats" so this little peach is probably just too high on the tree for us Americans to reach. Although I hope I'm wrong.

Do want.. Even those hideous headlights are starting to grow on me..

I think the F20 1-series is so much better looking at the front than the previous one, the rear though... Anyway, this, I wouldn't mind having one. :D

Nice, the E8x generation 1-er hatches only had the 130i option.. I always wondered why they never offer them as 135's as they did with the coupe and convertible.

This is still quite ugly though, I've seen a few 5 doors on the road now, and whilst the front isn't pretty.. I could live with it, but the back is still ugly.

Where has BMW gone? There trying to compete with Golfs and Focuses, they should stick to there big powerful executive sedans and coupes.

Just because they decide to make a 3dr hatch doesn't mean that the quality of the rest of their cars will decline. It's a big company. They can certainly spare the time to explore new models.

I know, I just don't think they will be able to pull it off, if they do, then great! But I just don't think it'll happen

Pros: Its a 3-door hatch not a coupe, and M Hot Hatch? I'm in Heaven!

Cons: It's as ugly as a old nun's nasty, I mean, with so many things wrong with the way it looks, I bet it isn't even good on the inside, who would want to own one?

They need to... rip up and throw away the horrid look ASAP, hopefully as soon as 1-2 years into the cars life, kinda like what they did with the Z4 (though it never looked bad, it did look improved I thought after that facelift), but please not like what they did to the great E46... (DAMN YOU BANGLE!) Actually can this car get worse in terms of looks? Crashing might help it.

It's all the donor car's fault, that poor freak should never have been made, so ugly, once they fix the looks, it'll be a marvelous car.

Til then, a car that is so ugly doesn't deserve anyone to buy it.

Don't really see that many 1 series beamers stateside.

Given that the US only gets the Coupe and the convertible, which made up only about 33% of global 1-er sales last year, it's not that suprising. They're all over the place over here.

That makes sense. But my brother was looking at BMWs actually, and he was interested in the 1 series, but the sales people kept saying the 3 series is a better buy. It's like they rather push the mainstream model than the quirky smaller one.

Looks like a 535i cut in half.

Though it's inside sounds promising.

They're offering 3-door and 5-door right away? Maybe they did learn something from the original 1-series.

Looks like it could be a good rival to the RS3 and rumored AMG A-Class

This is what I thought too. I'm not particularly happy with this because I do not want the German Three taking over the class and leaving everything else in an anonymous shadow like they've done with the saloon classes. I don't want stuff like the Megane RS and upcoming Astra GTC VXR being put down by the big battle that is sure to spark from this all.

What an ugly car. Chris Bangle needs to up his game. The new 3 looks anonymous, the 5 is extremely boring, the 7 looks like a wax rectangle left in the sun too long... The only nice looking car they make is the Z4.

There are limits to the amount of power/torque you can stick in a FWD car and still have a nice drive. Cars like the Focus RS already push (and cross) the limit. Of course, I would welcome a road-going version of the RWD Megane V6 Trophy. :D

As for the BMW: I like it, but it will probably cost around 60k euro over here. :(

I disagree. A white 5er with the M-Sport package on 19 inch wheels is one of the best looking cars on the road in my opinion. If you spec them right they look great, if you spec them wrong they are just dull.

BMW doesn't sell any cars designed by Bangle anymore.

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought he still worked there. He was a good designer, I guess his replacement isn't nearly as good as him.
