The BMW M3 is one of the most popular German performance coupes, and has always been a big contender for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM). In 1990 BMW released the Sport Evolution as a homologation special for the final years of Group A DTM (Before the FIA Class 1 Touring Era), the same as Mercedes (with the 190E Evo II) and Audi (V8 Quattro). While BMW were unable to win any championships using the E30 M3 Sport Evo (Audi won in 1990 & 1991 with Mercedes winning in 1992) they still got some good finishes with Joachim Winkelhock being the driver for the lead Schnitzer BMW. The 1992 season was dominated by Mercedes-Benz and their Evolution II 190E but Winkelhock's M3 still managed decent finishes (including a 1st & 2nd place finish at the 2 events at Norisring) and ended up 8th in the championship with 100 Points.
