BMW to take F1 to the old 'Ring
Thursday, 15, March, 2007, 11:36

BMW plans to make history in April, when it becomes the first modern Formula 1 team to run a car around the legendary 14.2-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit since the German Grand Prix moved to Hockenheim in 1977.

The old 'Ring, feared and respected above all other tracks when it was a fixture on the F1 calendar, stopped hosting the event after Niki Lauda's near-fatal accident in 1976.

Now, as a tribute to the venue – which still hosts a 24-hour race and remains a mecca for all car enthusiasts – Nick Heidfeld will become the first driver to lap the track in an F1 car in anger for 31 years, during a BMW motorsport day on April 28.

"This day is our way of saying thankyou to the fans for their support," said BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen.

"The F1 car's laps of the Nordschleife will be the highlight of a day devoted to BMW Motorsport.

"Nick's demonstration will not be about setting records, but a tribute to a unique race track – one which is inextricably linked to the heritage of BMW Motorsport."

I wanna see that lap/s which they are going to do :D

Wonder how a modern F1 car cope with that track. Anyway i would love that see that, Go BMW:tup:

I think it's around 6 minutes with a Porsche 962. But I could be wrong...

6 minutes 11 seconds with a Porsche 956 :sly:

(the track was in a slightly different configuration though)

I wonder if Nick could manage a sub 6 minute lap, even without pushing..

I think Bellof's 6.11 record was set on the old 20.8km circuit. I bet that the BMW Motorsport Day will take place on the full 24.4km circuit that includes the GP track.

Yeah, I pray that someone puts it on YouTube. :p

The lap time will be interesting, but he’d need some serious time at that track with the F1 car before he could even think about pushing.

If they use the GP track as well as the Nordschleife I think it would be difficult to break the record in just a couple of laps. Very possible, but difficult.

In other words: Nick, if you put the car in the fence, it's coming out of your paycheck.

Sorry folks, but he's probably not going to push the car that hard. A quick lap, sure, but he's not going to be at ten tenths.

Obviously he's not going to beat Bellof's record. I remember reading article about Bellof in a magazine and specifically about his track record. It also mentioned how in that same qualifying session (or was it an actual race?), in a following lap after the 6' 11" lap, he landed the 956 on its roof, no doubt trying to beat his own record.

I think Heidfeld will run on the long setup which includes the GP track so therefore it will be impossible for him to beat Bellof's record anyway.

This seems to be a very interesting event, I'm sure... After their snow'n'ice race they are going to run at Nordschleife. I'm sure that Nick will just pace his lap, but time would be fast. Awaitng to see this on Youtube :)

Oh man, I can't wait to see this. I hope he just doesnt' slowly cruise around the track, but actually pushes it. This will be amazing.

if this is a BMW promotional stunt, why not get Sabine Schmitt to do the lap. She could probably lap faster than Heidfield if given some time to familiarize herself with an F1 car. :dopey:

Boobs are too aerodynamically inefficient. :)

There had better be cameras all over the car. I can't wait to hear that thing scream down the back straight.

I think it's nearly impossible to push an F1 car on the Nurburgring, it's far too bumpy, Nick's bottom plate will be completly even before he finishes 1 lap

Well in the 70s they used to design F1 cars around the fact that they had to be able to run on the Nürburgring, so it’s going to be interesting to see how BMW deal with the surface.

Oh wow, they're gonna have to come up with some pretty special suspension set-up to avoid some tarmac - Heidfeld interface issues. I wonder what modifications they'll have to make to even be able to cruise around, let alone do a lap at anything approaching race speeds.

Having said that I know BMW have a "Nordschleife simulator", and they have more experience with the circuit than any other team on the grid, so if anyone has a chance of pulling this off it's them. I'd still love to see how they modify the car though.

*Imagines casters attatched to the bottom of the car. :dopey:*

That is true. I know that an Enzo is too flat for the Nordschleife. And that is a road (race) car.

D'oh, I only browse through this forum so I had a quick look on the first page of this section and also the Rumble strip.

Oh well at least it will envoke a bit more excitment around the event.

Although most of us prefer that one brings back the old topic rather than making a new one 👍

No-one's being rude, we're all friends here.

I wonder if someone can catch pics on the Nurbcam.
