BMW is considering building a small crossover positioned below the X3, according to a report by German magazine Auto Zeitung. Tentatively called the X1, the proposed utility vehicle would be based on the 1-Series platform.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer told the magazine such a vehicle would arrive on the market by 2010, with a sales target of around 100,000 units annually. It would feature the same x-drive all-wheel-drive system as the X3, with a combination of components from the 1-Series and X3.
Reithofer also mentioned successors to the Z8 and M1 are "the type of products we need in the future."

my dream is for BMW to make a new M1

Really? My dream is for BMW to stop making SUVs.

It's true though, their SUV's do look ugly. But then again, I don't like any of those luxurous SUV's like the X-series, Audi Q7 or something and all of those Land Rover, Porsche and Merc things. I always preferred a real off-roader like a Landcruiser or a Patrol GR 👍

It's not that. They're just utterly pointless with the 5-series and 3-series AWD wagons around.

The X-series are the cars for non-enthusiasts who buy BMWs for image and nothing else.

maybe for you ,but people over here don't like wagons and like 4x4s

How ironic that this sentence is very close to 100% correct, but yet it's at the end of a press release for a car that is 0% correct for BMW.

BMW is going to do an M1? They may as well do an 8-series in the process...

Lets recall every model that the general public has little to no recognition of! We'll sell a million cars!

...More seriously though, I can see the point in doing so. However, they need to choose to either follow-up the M1 or the Z8, you can't have both. IMO, given the performance of the Audi R8 and the A5, BMW may be better off doing an M1 successor. Problem is, the 1-series ruins a lot of that naming plan, so they may need to get creative in the marketing department...

...IMO, the idea of a fairly lightweight, mid-engined, 335-powered sports car is appealing. I'll just skip right over the version with the M3's V8, or maybe with the M5's V10...

I'm not liking yet another BMW SUV. All they do is satisfy the Americans who want to be a part of the SUV trend yet want a BMW. A lot of those German SUVs are rather pointless.

As for the M1, it sounds great. BMW is the only German 3 company without a "supercar," which could sell well. An MR with a 500hp V-10 sounds awesome, and if done right could easily outpace a Lambo. I wonder if and how BMW will go with this project.

I can already think of the perfect design for it. It would even be designed by the right guy!

Hmmm... let's dust off those old McLaren plans... see how much it'd cost to build as a spaceframe instead of all-carbon, and stick the new "M" engines in it... :D :D :D ...

I could see a bunch of BMW exotics... with an engine series ranging from the 3 liter twin turbo (diesel? Please?) throught the 4 liter V8 and up to the 5 liter V10. BMW does have most of the pieces to the puzzle, but would they actually consider spending on a halo vehicle like that?

X1? For some reason, I expect it to be painted orange and to go like a rocket...

-> Another BMW SUV!? Meh, why can't they just import the M5 Touring, the 335i Touring and the juicy 130i w/ M-Sport Package? Really, BMW tend to get suckier each model they release so far (except the 335i Coupe) just like Subaru. :grumpy:

-> But don't me wrong I like the idea of the M1. :dopey:
