The horsepower race is on, again! BMW's M5 was king of the hill with its hi-revving 507hp V10 until Mercedes released the E 63 AMG with 511hp. Surely only just a few extra horsepower but it still counts as the German premium marques compete with each other.
Now, there’s a new kid in town - the twin-turbo V10 Audi RS 6. With its massive 580 horsepower under the hood, it is speculated that Audi has understated the true horsepower figure of 600hp. How long will the RS 6 hold the throne? Well, most likely until the new Mercedes E 63 AMG is released in mid 2009 with a unconfirmed 544hp, however, it seems based upon these latest spy photos that BMW may have a trick or two planned.
Evidence shows BMW is preparing a slightly more evil version of the M5, and this time it appears to be twin-turbos! According to the photographer who snapped this M5 prototype, the engine sound was different from the usual M5. In addition, clearly visible are the extra air intakes cut in the front bumper. However, take a closer look inside the lower air duct openings on the sides of the front bumper and you'll notice a verticle flap which redirects the air flow into what appears to be sitting behind an intercooler for a turbo.
And while we are on the subject, why not speculate about the testing of an 7 Series based M7. The pictured 7-series prototype has shows a few clues beyind the normal 7-series prototypes that we have been seeing lately. Check out the big air scoop in the hood and two smaller air outlets at the back edge of the hood. Could this be the sign we have been hoping for? It’s known that the new 7 series will be sportier and more fun to drive, so why shouldn’t there also be an M7, after all to compete with Mercedes' S 65 AMG and Audi's potential RS8?

Well the fight is ON if this is true

That M5 should be cool. And crazy fast. I wonder how they are going to redo the front end to look presentable.

An M7? Mmmmm.... Maybe. True, there is the S65, but is there that much of a market for such a car? I would just stick with the M5 for big cars that go super fast.

This little war is starting to make the American muscle car race in the 60s and 70s seem so insignificant. I wonder what these cars will be worth in 40 years.

The difference here is that most of the late 60's musclecars looked good.

The RS6 doesn't look good? I quite like just about all, if not all of the German cars. I'm not too fond of most of the American muscle cars.

Ah... true, the RS6 is nice and the C-Classes (IMO) are okay. I was referring to the BMW's.

BMW should be reducing weight to increase performance, instead of adding power. This is really beginning to smack of bragging rights rather than anyone wanting to make a good car.

M motors should be NA. The N54 I happily accept. A turbo S series engine is just not making me a happy camper.

EDIT: After giving it a little thought: it might be a test bed for something else. There are a number of projects at the high end of the market that could use a turbo version of the S85. Could be a POC for the MR supercar or Z9/Z10/whathaveyou. Just because you see a mule running around doesn't mean its going to happen.

:crosses fingers:

OK. True. The M5 is presentable, but that's about it aside from the E46 M3.

As for muscle cars, I really only like the Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, and maybe a few others.

Anyway, I would rather have the E63 or RS6 to the M5. An S65 also sounds more appealing than an M7.

Compare it to the Musclecar race of the '60s? Uh, just about anyone in the market could afford a '60s Musclecar. These are super-pricey supersedans.

and only one has something other than a high-strung V10.

I'd really prefer it if the cars went back to V8s. I don't like V10 noise that much, even the Viper's. I never really liked Formula 1 car noise, either. I also wonder if the M5's ten can take the pressure. I'm sure BMW's capable of figuring out a way to do it, but you still have to wonder how a high-strung NA like the M5 mill would do when blown.

Yeah. All just a big power race. Shove whatever you can into whatever you have.

I do like V-8s more than V-10s, but I'm not complaining. Maybe you can get a better performance wil a V-10.

Turbo M5: Mmmm, I'll pass, thanks. Sure, more power is always great, but I agree that M-cars need to remain N/A to get the credit they deserve. Either way, I still miss the old V8 M5...

M7: Wait, why are we doing this again? I mean, sure, there are RS and AMG versions of the big sedans at Audi and Mercedes, but with a BMW it just doesn't quite feel right. This isn't the "cool" 7er from a few years back that could look the part and actually have the sporting credentials needed to be an M-car, but this one? Not so much. Stick to the Alpina tuning boys, thats plenty fine with me...

I believe I misplaced the memo that said that the Chapman line of thinking was irrelevant these days, though it looks like BMW got it.

If BMW decided to build a turbocharged M5, they'd be going back on a promise they've steadfastly held since the announcement of the 335i -- no turbocharged M-cars. Period.

It's not impossible, but it's unlikely.

No, the difference is that these cars can turn. And they're damn well-spec'd inside. And of the average guy just can't buy one. Other than that, these really are getting absurd. In a good way, I'm sure, but I don't know how just yet.

So the V8 M3 works for Chapman how, exactly?

No, the difference is that these cars can turn.

I think CAMAROBOY would argue that, and I would as well after riding in it. Not all Muscle Cars were lead-sleads, cars like the Z/28, AAR, BOSS, T/A, etc come to mind...

Sure, by today's standards they aren't that great, but they're still pretty decent. Technology, remember, has come a long, long way...

Those front extra vents look REALLY awkward
