The new BMW X4 Sports Activity Coupe could be described as the poor man’s BMW X6, but the truth is, the crossover has a lot more in common with the BMW X3. The X4 is a more expensive X3 with sportier looks that shares the same platform, engines and even interior with BMW's more conventional SUV.

The range-topping 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel unit in the BMW X4 produces 313PS (309hp) and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) of torque, allowing for a 0-100 km/h sprint of 5.2 seconds. Average fuel economy is rated at 6 l/100 km (39.2 mpg US).

Everyone in their sane mind hates the stupid and ridiculous X6, a smaller one isn't going to be any better.

ummm, I quite like it.

edit:

I have to say the M-sport model pictured here though is dog ugly. I actually like the overall shape, compared to jacked up tourers, but the face of the X4 M-sport is just bleh.

Needs to be X-line, in a dark colour, with 19's

Ugly just like it's larger sibling. I would pick the new Lexus NX over this as it has proper sharp styling. The BMWs look too frumpy to me.

I am so sick to death of the faux-SUV/crossover boom that's raging on at the moment, but I'll try my best to get through this post sane. BMW's X-range has always baffled me a bit, so I've done some brief research and the results are shocking.
Let's get this straight:
They started with the X5, a midsize luxury 5-door Crossover 💡
Then came the X3, a midsize luxury 5-door crossover slightly smaller than the X5. :indiff:
Then came the X6, an X5 with a coupe body and therefore no luggage space!? I thought that was the entire point of luxury crossovers... :yuck::banghead:
Then came the X1, a luxury 5-door crossover slightly smaller than the X3.
In the next few years, BMW has announced that they will also release X2, X4 and X7, and will support all 7 X models at the same time!! The X2 is a larger X1, the X4 is a smaller X6, and the X7 is really long.
WHY!? AREN'T THERE ENOUGH LUXURY CROSSOVERS IN THE WORLD!? WHO WILL BUY THESE!? THE MARKET IS SATURATED DAMNIT! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH.

Okay, that's enough bold caps for a long time, I think I'll be okay now.

Do you understand the difference between a 1 series, a 3 series, 5 series and a 7 series? If so, then you understand the difference, and therefore the need, for an X1, X3, X5, and upcoming X7. They are one concept presented at 4 different levels/price points.

And, do you understand the difference between... a 3 series tourer, and a 3 series coupe (now 4 series) or a 5 series tourer and a 6 series coupe? If so, then you should appreciate that the latter sacrifices the practicality of the former, for greater dynamics/style/exclusivity. In which case, you should realise the relationship between the X5 and X6, and the X3 and X4. Doubtless when the X2 comes along it will be a similar arrangement to the new X1.

Whether or not you think the market is saturated, the fact is it's a growth sector for BMW, and a profitable one. Does the world need them, as much as it needs choice.

To help explain things, these are graphs I posted elsewhere on the webz..

Yes, I understand, BMW makes an awful lot of models and miraculously they're all selling. No need to patronise me for venting about my disgust for most crossovers. Perhaps BMW are aiming to be the new Toyota, with several models for every possible niche.

Sorry, didn't mean to patronise, but having re-read my post this morning I see why you would have got that from it.

To be honest I don't mind people not liking these vehicles or even being disgusted by them, they're not for everybody, and the styling (especially of BMW's 'Sports Activity Coupes') can be challenging, however you did say that it baffled you, and you did state that the market was saturated, all I meant to do was put the X range in perspective, and demonstrate that there is growing demand, rather than saturation.
