Can someone explain to me a) how boost low really works and b) how I can tune a car to take advantage of it?

In a race lobby with a fixed power point restriction, boost seems to favor some cars over others. Has anyone else experienced this where you can run faster laps than someone in free run but when the race starts they can take the lead and you cannot catch up?

I had 2nd fastest time at Tokyo R246 last night, 450PP. My '02 Garaiya was super fast through the turns but I knew it would fall short on the straight. I figured boost would help a little bit and keep me close to the lead. I was wrong. I fell behind every lap. Even when I dropped to 5th place, cars were passing me on the straight like I was standing still. I usually got around a few on the back section but unless I had a 10 second gap entering the straight they'd catch up to me. Meanwhile I was making no headway on the leaders.

So at first I thought, boost is magnified by how far behind you are. If that's the case I should be able to pull on someone in front of me right? Wrong. If I entered the straight a few clicks behind someone they would pull away and I could not keep up.

So basically I concluded that despite the Garaiya being able to run the same lap times as the other cars (faster than 10 of the 12 cars on the track) once boost was on, it became a piece of junk. I'd like to know the boost formula so i can pick cars that will run quick with boost off as well as boost on.

Anyone else experienced this? Having boost on is great for keeping cars close...but when the same drivers win every time despite my being able to run quicker free run laps, it has me confused as to what I should look for in choosing and tuning a car for PP racing when boost is on.

I never drive with boost as it is just plain bad. If anyone uses it, they suck.

Rooms with boost = Rooms with reets.

Boost is supposed to even the playing field if you are using different cars.

I know, but it doesn't. Some cars gain more from boost than others. If your car was quick down the straight before, it will be uber quick with boost. Might as well just drive a Dodge RAM if the track has a long straight.

I avoid rooms with boost on, period.

If slower cars gain more boost then it does indeed even out the playing field, does it not?

You might think it's "random" because boost isn't a defined X horsepower on car Y. What boost does is give cars that are behind extra power, while they are behind, regardless of what car they are. Once they're caught up or overtake, that boost relaxes and goes away. It's meant to keep the race closer between cars with broad performance differences, or players with differing skill levels.

boost ispretty much this..

Low boost.
Those behind the leader gain a slight power advantage and handling advantage where as the race leaders car remains the same.. this is to keep racing close and avoid huge gaps growing!

High Boost.
Those behind the lead car gain a bigger power advantage and considerably better handling where just noticeable. The lead car loses power in the form of torque but not BHP and handling slightly reduces. when the lead car is overtaken the new lead car takes on the role as the car with the disadvantage. Again to keep the racing even

Perfect example. I used a generated track with a steep hill. We were doing 1 make races. in lap 1 i was in second and accelerating up the hill slightly gaining speed. lap 2 i was in the lead and as i was accelerating up the hill i was losing speed and i had the exact same entry line and speed approaching the hill

LOL, I was reading and it took me 3 posts to figure out you guys weren't talking about boost (turbo, supercharger). lol

but like what was said above, yea it's dumb. A aid and that is all it is.
