Both savegame and backup corrupted

Is there anyway what so ever to repair the save game file?

I copied the savegame file off the PS3, and deleted it hoping that the backup savegame was fine, it too was corrupted.

Are there any tools that can help in the restoration of the file, or does my father-in-law have to really start from scratch.
 
Thanks all the same. I personally, once a week, backup my savegames to USB also. I will strongly encourage the FIL to do this also.

At least he is only a casual gamer, but he has also lost the cars from the special seasonals.
