Four years ago February I started working at Walgreens as a pharmacy tech. It was an after school job that paid decently. Well about 2 months ago I went to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Test (PTCT) which would give me a raise and also other raises throughout my time with the company. It was kinda a spur of the moment thing because normally, you have to go to classes for like a month to prepare for this, but this time was the first time that they were offering it without taking the classes. So I signed up and I had a bunch of materials that I was supposed to study. The day of the test comes and I looked at nothing. I get there and the girl next to me has like 3 huge books that she is looking at for last minute cramming. I wanted to ask her if I could look at one just to get an idea of what some of the questions would be but I didnt. I get there and sign in and then it starts. I then realize that there are 8 different versions of the test floating around. Just my luck I get the hospital one, which was basically asking questions about IV dosing and medicine carts. I thought I failed for sure because I work with retail only. I'm not gonna lie, most of the 200 questions I guessed on. I was one of the first ones finished with the test. I go home thinking that I failed and not really caring because this will not mess up my life or anything (I'm not even a pharmacy major). Fast forward to today, I am working 12-830. The phone rings and it is the district supervisor, she wants to talk to me. I'm thinking oh crap lecture about failing the test. So she makes me go through all of these steps to find out if I passed or not. The whole time I am thinking that she is doing this to make me feel like an ass for failing the test. Well with all said and done it turns out that I passed! Which is cool for me because of the pay raise and the sweet new name tag. I dont know if this thread is going to go anywhere or not, but I just wanted to let anyone who cares know.

You are a very lucky man. But to tell you the truth, it scares me a little.......

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. This is one of the situations where it isn't better to be lucky than good. I'm sure if you had one a retail meds test we wouldn't be saying that. Congrats, again. :)👍

Congrats. My brother is halfway through his third year of pharmacy school.

Honestly, guessing your way through a tech test doesn't seem like a big deal. As far as I know it isn't as if the techs are measuring out the dosages or determining safety decisions. They are usually the guys that hand you the bag and ring you up. At most they stock the shelves or put your pre-measured medicines in a bottle.

There is a legal limit to how far you can go without being a pharmacist.

Then there is always the chance that he guessed wisely because he is actually very intuitive about this stuff.

It scares me more. Please don't do anything at your job on a whim!

Did you stay at a holiday inn the night before?

Thanks guys, the reason that I passed by mostly guessing was because it was the hospital version of the test and I work in retail. If I got the retail version, I would have been able to get through it easily. And as far as a tech goes, we enter new prescriptions and refills into the computer, count pills/pour out liquids, ring up customers, and we can give some advice on OTC products.

TABS: I'm not a pharmacy major because I just dont think that I can deal with all of the stupid questions/people who come in or call on a daily basis.
