The car is a '91 Fiat Uno.

Basically, every now and again (once every month or 2) the brakes will stop working after driving around 10 miles. The pedal goes straight to the floor and barely stops. It was pretty scary the first time it happened :scared: Lucky nothing bad has happened.

It only seems to appear during hot weather. The whole winter (3-4 months) I never had the brake issue.

A few people have said it could be an air bubble in the lines and to pump the pedal to rectify the situation. When I do this, while pulled over and not moving, the brakes to seem to go back to normal. However, as soon as I pull away and give them a test, the pedal goes to the floor again.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? Like I said, it doesn't happen very often, but enough to be a concern.

Thanks.

Did you try pumping your brakes? I'm thinking it's something in the brake lines. I would recommend taking your car to a mechanic to see what the problem is.

Brake master cylinder might have bad seals. At least the symptoms sound like it. Also, when was the last time the brake fluid was replaced?

Look where the master cylinder meets the firewall.

Is the paint their all bubbly?

If so you need a new master cylinder.
Are any of the brake lines damaged?
What is the color of the fluid.

Do you have brake drums on the back?

On the initial application does the car pull to one side?

I'll check the master cylinder.

Don't think there are drums on the rear from what I remember. No pulling to the side from the car either.

Maybe your brakes is faded because if your brakes is faded then your brakes is not as strong as it is new

Park your car and have a friend look in each wheel well when you push the brakes to the floor. I had something similar and it turned out i had a pin hole leak in my rear brake line. It would only leak when you stomped on the brakes.

Sounds like brake fade, does it usually happen after some heavy braking?

Try changing the fluid first, bleed at all 4 wheels, start at the wheel furthest away form the master cylinder.

Obviously check the brake pad/shoe linings for wear and check for any obvious fluid leaks while you're at it.

The best solution here. Brakes are important, and for someone who is not experienced at working on cars, getting information from the Internet on how to diagnose a problem and then fix isn't a good idea.

Take it to a qualified mechanic.
