The 404 and the 4-door 405 were the first Bristol models to abandon the old BMW inspired shape in
favor of a new, aircraft inspired, streamlined shape. Under the bonnet there were few changes, the Car was still based on Bristol's shortened standard chassis and engine, both of which were based on the BMW 327. The 404 was well received, it was a fast and refined Grand Tourer but the high production cost meant that it was almost as expensive as a Bentley, and thus not a commercial success.
