Well I guess my opinion on the car is invalid, but whatever. I can imagine paying $1.25 million on the car (which is still outrageous), but the extra money just isn't worth it IMO.

I can't help it that I'm a tight-fisted Dutchman, its just the way we are...

Murray still regularly writes a column for EVO, and Rowan Atkinson also had a little stint with the magazine.

I say they'll take those CF panels from the convertible and put 'em on the coupe, add a minor facelift and some edgier wheels and sell it as a performance version for a few extra clams.

Yes, even bring up the name Veyron around John and he starts his any Veyron rants.

We get in huge fights on a nightly basis - in fact, tonight he told me, "All Veyron lovers should be put in the middle of a road, where I can drive a Vector W8, and cut them all in half." That came after this incident:

MistaX: Anyway I hate people that like the Veyron
MistaX: Who is with me?

I've got that issue of TopGear, his review wasn't all that great imo, he hept talking about the F1, and making out that the F1 was the perfect car. I mean yah, he has reason to be proud of building the F1, but he wasn't reviewing the F1, nor was he reviewing a car that was built to be the same type of car as the F1.

You get Gordon Murray to review the Veyron, you want Gordon Murray to talk about the F1. Otherwise you could get anyone to do it.

Not really, because Gordon Murray has actually built a supercar, but you'd think that he could expand his vison somewhat to take it intop account that not every supercar is built in the same mould as the McLaren F1.

when he was on a TV show with horacio pagani they were meant to compare each others cars. Pagani praised the F1 loads, like a good gentlemam would. The best think murray had to say about the pagani was that it was "alright".

I dont like murray

I like him for designing the F1 but from weverything I've read of his, he doesn't seem to be able to apperciate or give decent praise to anything he didn't build or have a hand in building, regardless of how good it is.

Murray is the world's biggest fan of both the Smart Roadster and the original Lotus Elan - neither cars had any imput from him, but they do closely follow what he thinks is the ideal road car formula - light weight, no nonsense, pure handling and modestly powered. The Veyron (and even Zonda to an extent) doesn't tick any of these boxes which is why he is indifferent to them.

The Smart roadster isn't all that great though, the original Elan, sure but the Smart. Well I did say from what I've read, and I've never read anything about his opinions of thoes two cars, but the McLaren F1 isn't much lighter than the Zonda's, but it did cost twice as much. How does that factor into his thoughts.

The McLaren wasn't built to a budget, the Zonda is (a high budget!) Performance is cheaper to come by these days. Off-the-shelf 600+bhp engines are fairly commonplace and Carbon fibre know how is much more predominant than it was 10 years ago. The review i read of Gordon Murray and Horacio Pagani's meeting gave me the impression that Murray liked the Zonda and praised plenty of things about it. The F1 was something so individual and important to him at the time you can hardly expect him to be too objectional about it - To him it's perfection, it's like asking Michelangelo to compare the Sistine Chapel to everyone elses paintings.

I've read him talk about Elan and Smart, too, but he still can't resist mentioning his Rocket (stop snickering). Actually, he can't talk about anything without mentioning either of his projects, especially the F1. I think even on his anti-SUV rant and he considered the F1 a better commuter car....

Well, when you made argueably one of the most iconic cars of the past 20 years, wouldn't your ego be a little big too? Give the guy some credit for doing what he did, but yes I would agree that he can give some to others as well...

Ditto. Murray's a crank, but a very peculiar one, being responsible for one of the most iconic supercars of all time. People get him to talk about the Bugatti because they want to hear about the F1, too.

In his other writing, he's very critical of cars for one thing... weight. This obsession borders on monomania, but it's entertaining to read, mostly because I actually agree with him.

That said, he's actually had a few kind words about non-light cars, like the new Ferraris, for instance.

Coolest? Debatable. I personally think the coolest car every manufactured was the VW Beetle... first edition.

Fastest, most powerful and most ridiculously expensive? Hell, yes. So far...

That's why Gordon Murray always tries to downplay the top speed record the McLaren F1 took, because he knew, eventually, that something would go faster. Of course, he's one of the biggest Veyron haters of all, so his opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.

Is that why he loves the car on the track? He says it isn't as aerodynamic as his F1, but it is great on the track with excellent acceleration and handling. He also thought it was a bit much for the road, too big.

Actually, Gordon Murray carps about it being too big on the road and having too much turbo lag.

Jeez, the last words in the thread are "too big" and then someone mentions the Bentley Continental GT. Is there any surprise?

I'm going on price here...

If the targa will cost more than the hard top, let's say that it's about £900,000+.

The Veyron is not nine times faster than a Continental GTC, and the Bentley is still a decent car.
