Hey everybody
Boy, I'm bummin now. I've been saving my scratch so I can purchase a Formula GT...I REALLY want one(and need one) and since they only show up periodically in the ucd, my 5 mil is burning a hole in my bank. Well, after diddling around re-doing some licenses and some special events, I went back to the ucd and guess what's sitting in there with less than 5000km..? A Gillet race car for 1.4 mil and the Toyota GT 1 race car for 3.2 mil! Oh how they taunted me so...but I resisted. With the luck I've been having, if I had bought both of 'em, I guarantee you to that one of FGT's would've shown up and I'd be broke. So....the slog continues.....

The FGT sits in the ONLINE DEALERSHIPS 24/7 and has been for over a month.

I just bought my second OCD FGT....the Green and Gold one that looks suspiciously like an HSBC Jaguar

Yeah, I know. I should of mentioned...I don't race online. Never have and probably never will. I can't justify the cost of needing to get all the hardware and internet service, especially where I live.

Wait...If your online now, then how are you saying you don't pay for service? Are you at your library or something?

I'm using a wireless broadband connection on my laptop. There is also a free wi-fi hot spot in my area. It's a bit dodgy sometimes but it's free. I've asked several people about using my laptop but was told, even by Sony tech support that I can't piggy back my ps3 to my laptop without getting an actual modem and some other hardware. And there is one other tiny issue...I live on an extremely tight fixed income and I just can't afford the $100+ a month broad band access. As it is now, my laptop costs me $65 a month for a whopping 5GB of use through Verizon.

Sony lied to you. Just have to bridge your wifi card with your ethernet card. Run a cable from your laptop to the ps3 and voila.

Seriously? It's that easy? wtf sony!? I don't think I have a wi-fi card. According to my laptop, this is what's inside my laptop...

Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini Card

and

Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller

I have no other boxes, wires, land line....nothing. So, what your saying is, if I get a cable(what kind...ethernet?) and connect it from my laptop to my ps3, I'll be able to race online?

Yes, dell is the wireless card and marvell is the ethernet card.

Google "ps3 bridge", should be all you need to get going.

or bridge it to your WIRED network and use a crossover cable between your ps3 and laptop

In windows it's usually referred to as ICS (internet connection sharing)

He doesn't have a wired network. He needs to bridge the wireless, where he gets the ineternet connection from, with his ethernet card which will then let him connect his ps3 to the net.

I vote you take your PS3 to a friends / relatives house hook up to there internet for the 5 mins needed to buy the FGT from the online dealership.

Clearly.. but if you have a WIRELESS verizon setup, you have to BRIDGE to another interface.. that being the wired one (would be the best bet)

Trust me.. i do this crap for a living.

Are you running one of those verizon USB 3G "internet sticks" or a built in 3g service?
If so, you can bridge to either connection, but the wired one would be the easiest one to set up and would be the most stable.
What operating system are you using?

I sat get rid of the broadband wireless service that is costing you $65 a month and go and get either fios/comcast/charter/dsl or whatever you can get in your area for less than $65 a month. I pay $50 a month for my high speed connection.

+1 if you can find a decent price. I found it a bit high that you were quoting 100 a month..

I pay around that for internet (15Mbps) as well as digital cable..

I hope the OP manages to work a solution to get his PS3 online - I won't add anything technical because I think the advice already given is more than adequat; I'd just add that with a 5GB pcm limit he should be careful!

you are missing out on patches and updates by never connecting to the net. Be prepared for a few large downloads the first time you connect.

$100+ a month broad band access.

Sweet baby Jesus that's expensive! What speed is that?

The most expensive option I can choose at my current provider is around $85 a month and that's a 111 Mbps. As is I'm paying 30$ a month for an 8Mbps...

Thanks for all the info guys, I appreciate it. Now to answer some questions..

XtReMe98...I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. I do use what looks like one of those 3G devices inserted to one of my USB's, Verizon called it a "booster". On the back of the stick, it does say 3G.

Padam07...I still have 9 months left on my contract with verizon.

Jacon6875...closest relative is 4 hours away and the few people I do know where I live don't game. I'm the oddball in my area. Actually, now that I think about it, there may be one person I might be to ask about using his connection.

TenEightyOne...Yeah, the 5GB limit is def a concern. I was thinking that if I was going to race online, I'd log on to the wi-fi network...maybe. I'll have to look into that.

Notacop...Yeah, I know. I asked about what I was missing out on the playstation forum awhile back. I knew I was missing out on some good stuff. But, I also heard that there were quite a few people that actually had issues after some updates...that worries me a little.

250 GTO...I believe is was for Fios through Comcast...I think. Not sure about the speed. I'll have to look around to find out what's in my area.

Believe me guys, I really want to race online. I think it would be a great way to better my skills and to find out how good/bad I actually am in relation to everybody else.

What they are saying is right, you can create a bridge with your laptop. That;s what I used to do when I had "the other box" when I didn't want to drop the extra $99 for the wireless accessory.

Also just an FYI but if you have a newer smart phone some of those can be used to create wireless networks.

Do you live in a rural area or somewhere that just doesn't have a decent telco instrastructure? It shouldn't cost you anywhere near $100 for a broadband connection, let alone $65.

I'm paying $35 for a DSL connection (and I'm in Canada, where prices are generally higher due to lack of any real competition in the ISP segment).

No, I live in a 'suburban' area. About 55 miles south of boston mass. and 15 miles east of providence rhode island

Ummmm, this is exactly what I told him to do.

Telling him to try something else, when that something else is the same thing that was already suggested, is kind of pointless, isn't it?

Don't forget, once you first do this, you're gonna have a massive 600+mb update to download before using GT.

Telling him to do something without giving ANY instructions or links or any terms to look for such as ICS is pretty pointless as well..

"Dude.. its a network bridge setup... everyone knows that right?"

At least i steered him in the right direction AND even tried to find out his current OS so i could give him a step by step..

"google ps3 bridge" hu? Great advice.

Rolling thunder.. I'll give you a good write up in a bit for win 7

Here's a perfect walkthrough

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifDyMaWC0Mk

at the 4 min mark you can simply ignore the rest and set up your ps3's network through the standard setup to obtain a new ip after connecting your laptop to your ps3 via a CROSSOVER cable. This you'll probably have to buy but they're cheap.

If it doesn't work after this then you have two options. Disable your firewall, or open the following ports:

UDP: 3658, 3478-3479
TCP: 80, 443, 5223

Hopefully this helps.

Good luck man :)

My god.. Internet access is crazy expensive out there..

Just go back to Verizon, and see what it will take to trade in your usb stick for a mifi card. Same plan, same service, just wireless. It looks like a credit card. You plug it into your computer to set it up, after that all you have to do is turn it on, then you have wifi. Data plan limits are still a pain though. You do have to ba carefull with them. Racing online will not usually run you out of data, but upgrade patches, and downloadable games/dlc will kill it fast.

I think the term your looking for is B.O.H.I.C.A.!!!
And yes, in most cities what they charge for ISP could be classified as sodomy
