Ok so today i did something stupid for the first time wth my car. I revved my engine to about 4500rpms(peak torque) while moving at around 8mph and dropped the clutch in second. I did this before but i was going about 20mph and got the wheels to spin and it pulled nicely. This time was a horrendous result. Clutch fully free pedal to the metal but my car wasnt moving any faster, just making this sound that was like a blinder. Then i could smell the clutch burning. Does this mean i may have damaged it?, it works normally however. How much life does a damaged clutch have?

Car, 2004 Mazda 3 5-door.

A good test for a rooted clutch is to find a steep hill and drive up it in top gear with your foot flat on the gas, if the revs climb quickly then the clutch is slipping too much.

Burning clutch smell is nothing to be too worried about, I occasionally get a whiff of clutch when driving my car, but my clutch was rebuilt less then 2000kms ago so it may still be wearing in.

If it's doing it all the time it may pay to get it checked.

As long as it doesn't slip changing gears it should be okay, for now.

I know with my parents clutch the burning smell has usually meant it'll go in the next few thousand miles.

If it doesnt slip while driving dont worry about it, what you did wouldnt have helped your clutches life but its still probably fine.

One night I was practicing launches in my car and I accidently slipped the clutch too much on one launch and over heated my clutch, it continued to slip pretty bad for alittle while and stank but after it cooled it was fine.

try using 1st gear for burnouts

My car wont burn out very long it makes 160hp(mazdas claim). It has 11800 miles on it and i put 11798 on it. It always slips when its cold out in all gears. I only got a funny smell going in reverse. But thanks for the advice I'll run some test on it.

try using less gas & more clutch....need I say if it's hard to do a burnout in 1st, you should never ever do what you did again? unless your clutch is under warrenty---then beat the crap out of it & get a new 1---then never do it again
