I got the game yesterday and well... it exceeded my expectations for the game by a long shot (and I was expecting a very spectacular game).
Gameplay:
Physics have been improved a LOT and the cars feel like they have more weight to them. They also handle a lot more like the cars they represent (dodge viper look-alike is fast as fark but oversteers easy)
The world tour mode is non-linear - that means you can take any path you wish to take in order to gain 100% completion of the game. If you're in the mood for crash mode for a few races, you can do it. Obviously, you want to balance things out for variety's sake.
In terms of cars/tracks/crash junctions, the numbers of each have improved by a HUGE amount. There's just soooo much to unlock in the game that it doesn't get boring at all. Granted, some of the tracks will use familiar areas of the cities, but that's besides the point. There is still enough variety to keep me entertained for a long time to come.
New gameplay modes:
off the top of my head, there are the following:
Road Rage - boost guage fills up quickly and you just drive through the track trying to crash as many enemy cars as you can within the time limit while keepin g yours from being destroyed. Lots of fun and it doesn't get tiring. Online, you can do this in a 3v3 mode where 3 people chase and 3 people try to run.
Lap Eliminator - last place racer of each lap is disqualified
co-op crash mode - you and a friend (online or offline) work together to make the biggest crash possible. Haven't tried it yet but it seems like tons of fun. I can't wait till my friends and I get together again so we can play this one.
Crashes:
Crashes are just fricking AMAZING here. They introduced real explosions to the game, there are more flying parts, more sparks, and the aftertouch control just sweetens the whole deal. After you crash, you can actually get some control over the momentum of the car and guide it in the direction you want (aka, at the opponent or into more traffic for a bigger crash. If you hit an oil tanker hard enough, the thing WILLexplode and make a much bigger accident.
I haven't delved too deep into crash mode yet, but the 2 player crash mode has both a co-op mode and a battle mode (where you try and get the highest score from the same intersection). Online, you can have up to 8 people doing a "crash party" where you take turns.
My one peeve here is that the game doesn't show instant replays of ANYTHING. It's sometimes annoying when you just made that perfect crash and then the game doesn't even let you see all that effort in a replay.
Online:
all offline modes are available online. The only difference online is that races don't allow aftertouch control since that puts the crashes into slow motion. Up to 6 players for races, and 8 for crash parties. Lag is almost negligible on each of the servers I connected to. Furthermore, the game has support for the logitech headsets. Unfortunately, I don't have one
Graphics:
Graphics have been improved by a huge margin over the previous game. The level of detail in the game world is just amazing. The graphics improve more as you speed up since everything blurs as you fly past at 180+ mph. In terms of the fast feeling that you get, Burnout 3 is more than twice what Burnout 2 was. The speed is just bloody rediculous at times, yet the game is still playable.
Music:
Keep in mind that musical tastes are purely subjective. That said, I feel that the soundtrack of Burnout 3 is absolutely horrible... unless of course, you actually *like* somewhat poppy sounding emo/punk music
. This is the first EA game i've played with such a ****ty soundtrack. Turn it off and fire up your stereo if you have good taste in music or want to preserve your eardrums. Burnout 2's repetitive soundtrack was thousands of times better than this.
Concept and Execution: 9.5/10
Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 9.5/10
Music: 2/10 (ranked much higher if you like punk rock/emo or whatever it's called)
Gameplay: 90/10 (very fun)
Replayability: 10/10
Overall: 9.75/10 (not an average)
If you played and enjoyed burnout 2, you will absolutely LOVE this one. It's 10x more addictive than burnout 2. If you've never played the burnout games, go buy this because you'll absolutely love it.
STRONGLY reccomended
I'll work on a much more detailed review for bytesector.com sooner or later (most likely the weekend)
