I got the game yesterday and well... it exceeded my expectations for the game by a long shot (and I was expecting a very spectacular game).

Gameplay:
Physics have been improved a LOT and the cars feel like they have more weight to them. They also handle a lot more like the cars they represent (dodge viper look-alike is fast as fark but oversteers easy)

The world tour mode is non-linear - that means you can take any path you wish to take in order to gain 100% completion of the game. If you're in the mood for crash mode for a few races, you can do it. Obviously, you want to balance things out for variety's sake.

In terms of cars/tracks/crash junctions, the numbers of each have improved by a HUGE amount. There's just soooo much to unlock in the game that it doesn't get boring at all. Granted, some of the tracks will use familiar areas of the cities, but that's besides the point. There is still enough variety to keep me entertained for a long time to come.

New gameplay modes:
off the top of my head, there are the following:

Road Rage - boost guage fills up quickly and you just drive through the track trying to crash as many enemy cars as you can within the time limit while keepin g yours from being destroyed. Lots of fun and it doesn't get tiring. Online, you can do this in a 3v3 mode where 3 people chase and 3 people try to run.

Lap Eliminator - last place racer of each lap is disqualified

co-op crash mode - you and a friend (online or offline) work together to make the biggest crash possible. Haven't tried it yet but it seems like tons of fun. I can't wait till my friends and I get together again so we can play this one.

Crashes:
Crashes are just fricking AMAZING here. They introduced real explosions to the game, there are more flying parts, more sparks, and the aftertouch control just sweetens the whole deal. After you crash, you can actually get some control over the momentum of the car and guide it in the direction you want (aka, at the opponent or into more traffic for a bigger crash. If you hit an oil tanker hard enough, the thing WILLexplode and make a much bigger accident.

I haven't delved too deep into crash mode yet, but the 2 player crash mode has both a co-op mode and a battle mode (where you try and get the highest score from the same intersection). Online, you can have up to 8 people doing a "crash party" where you take turns.

My one peeve here is that the game doesn't show instant replays of ANYTHING. It's sometimes annoying when you just made that perfect crash and then the game doesn't even let you see all that effort in a replay.

Online:
all offline modes are available online. The only difference online is that races don't allow aftertouch control since that puts the crashes into slow motion. Up to 6 players for races, and 8 for crash parties. Lag is almost negligible on each of the servers I connected to. Furthermore, the game has support for the logitech headsets. Unfortunately, I don't have one :(

Graphics:
Graphics have been improved by a huge margin over the previous game. The level of detail in the game world is just amazing. The graphics improve more as you speed up since everything blurs as you fly past at 180+ mph. In terms of the fast feeling that you get, Burnout 3 is more than twice what Burnout 2 was. The speed is just bloody rediculous at times, yet the game is still playable.

Music:
Keep in mind that musical tastes are purely subjective. That said, I feel that the soundtrack of Burnout 3 is absolutely horrible... unless of course, you actually *like* somewhat poppy sounding emo/punk music :yuck:. This is the first EA game i've played with such a ****ty soundtrack. Turn it off and fire up your stereo if you have good taste in music or want to preserve your eardrums. Burnout 2's repetitive soundtrack was thousands of times better than this.

Concept and Execution: 9.5/10
Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 9.5/10
Music: 2/10 (ranked much higher if you like punk rock/emo or whatever it's called)
Gameplay: 90/10 (very fun)
Replayability: 10/10
Overall: 9.75/10 (not an average)

If you played and enjoyed burnout 2, you will absolutely LOVE this one. It's 10x more addictive than burnout 2. If you've never played the burnout games, go buy this because you'll absolutely love it.

STRONGLY reccomended

I'll work on a much more detailed review for bytesector.com sooner or later (most likely the weekend)

I saw the glowing Gamespot review. I looks cool. I might rent it, possibly.

John, that might be your shortest post evr!

eh.. I'm banning EA ****... anyway, I can't believe EA had there filthy hands in this game too. It's so damn good! Encourage Road Rage?!? Brilliant! Oh, and Sparks, pretty... :dopey:👍

Oh, get off my ass about post length! Whatever I say has to be said, how many times do I have to keep repeating that? Don't like "long posts," don't read the next two paragraphs.

(Note: I played the PS2 version) When I played the Burnout 3 demo from the Official Playstation Magazine featuring racing games (including GT4, there's a GT4 topic on it). Burnout 3 is actually more fun than Burnout 2. What sucked is that you get only one lap. You race this muscle car looking car. The environment and cars are more realistic-looking than somewhat cartoonish. You want a lovely environment to race with, try out that ride through the streets. When you ram someone into the wall and make them wipe out, you score a Takedown. When you crash, you can hold down R1 or R2 (one of them) buttons to make the crash slow down in time, so you get this Hollywood-style slowdown of your car getting OWN3D. Of course, the most fun you'll have is acting a fool on the roads in this game. So all in all, I'd definitely want to rent this game. I hear you can race in North America, Europe, and Asia. I never got to race custom cars in Burnout 2 because I didn't make it that far with my GameCube rental of Burnout 2.

All in all, I'd have to say this game is pretty cool. I'd surely want to try this game out.

I'll agree with you on this one. The song they used for the intro, in my opinion, pretty bad :indiff:. I turned off the music (except for the engine sound) and play it. It's a really, really bad soundtrack.

I rented it but only played for about an hour (Got $25 in rentals as a gift). I also rented CMR3. I ended up being mildly entertained by burnout, but decided to play CMR. I didn't play burnout 3 again for the duration of the rental.

So I guess that means that I don't like it. I am biased though, I hate arcady games. I give it a 6.8/10

Edit: Wow I just realised that I'm replying to a thread started and killed a few months ago. Whoops.

My only peeve was all the talk about this game hanging with HALO 2, GTA: San Andreas, and such for being game of the year. It was fun, it was lovely, but I would not say that this would be the best game of 2004. And I damn wouldn't put this game over Gran Turismo 4. Maybe I'm just a big GT fan, but I wouldn't put this game over a game that's not even out yet.

Regardless, Burnout 3 was pretty cool from what I played.

My biggest peeve in BO3 is that the 2 player modes run at 30 fps. When you've been playing single player at a ROCK SOLID 60, 30 is just so...ughh.

I got the PS2 version.... wow. Never thought it was that good (or fun) :)

Crash mode is very entertaining, Road Rage is just plain fun...

My rating: 9.5/10

This is indeed a fun game. My wife has managed to rack up $1.763 million in one crash.

It's quite the fun party game, as it takes no time to learn, and it involves loud noises. I think I ran it up to 98% before I got stuck on the Circuit Racer.

I'm hoping that someone here can answer a question for me. I'm wondering if the Logitech DFP wheel works with this game. If it does, the wife'll let me pick that up. She can't see outlaying $150 just for GT4, but if it works with Burnout3, I'm golden. As at that point, she'll let me built a chassis for it. :D

Thanks,

AO

It works.. But playing BO3 with a DFP is close to impossible... There's no way you can turn quick enough, even in 200 degree mode...

But don't tell the wife, she might as well discover it for herself ;)

I got Burnout 2 for GameCube, loved it. Then I bought Burnout 3 for PS2, not loving it.

The problem is that I can't configure the buttons in DS2 as I would like to. I can't use left analog as a throttle and left for steering. And other way round I just can't drive. 'Cubes controller is soooooo much better.

Other than that it's ok game. I've mostly played crash events, which are super fun. They are more refined and versatile than in B2, plus very cool graphic wise.

Racing events are ok too. But just ok, nothing more.

I was dissapointed to net game. It worked ok techically but there's just not enough players. I can get a good net race on Toca Race Driver 2 any time, any day. In B3 I can find maybe couple of decent games PER WEEK, if I'm lucky. Not the game's fault but still annoying.

In scale from 1 to 5 I'd give 3. Got my copy second hand so I wasn't gutted about it not beign the perfect arcade racer I thought i to be.

I think the Crash Events are a waste of time. Sure, a couple would have been fun to demonstrate the game engine, but half of the game consists of these crappy events. After 10 of them it gets repetitive, not interesting at all. Even while playing the game with friends and a crate of beer they also thought the game mode was pointless and not fun at all.

The racing is awesome, but I can't win all races near the end. For example the one with the formula 1 cars... impossible for me to win. Those cars really drive unnatural and spin out easily.

Does anybody know the best place to score a takedown into a Wine Truck and a Big Rig hauling speedboats? I need these two to unlock the Oval Circuit Racer.
