Buying a new console?

If you were buying a new console right now and had none at all, what would you get?

Maybe that's too difficult ... how about this. A friend of your's in another state is buying a console and doesn't have any games right now. What would you recommend they get?

A friend of mine in California called and asked me - then he went out and bought the opposite. I told him to get an XBox now if he just had to have something. And get Live and Ghost Recon along with some other online games. That way we could play together easily. Then when GT4 comes out he should get the GT4 / PS2 pack.

So what would you do? As an example, what would you tell them to get for Christmas? Or what would you buy your friend for Christmas if you had $300 to spend on them?
 
Definately PS2. Everyone drools at Halo, but thats only one good game. PS2 has so many quality games out now both new and old. Some more pros on the PS2 would be that, for the most part, online is free, the great games keep coming, and it's backwards compatible with the PS1.

Not wanting to sound like a fanboy, there are some excellent reasons to go out an buy an Xbox. Microsoft isn't going anywhere, there are still some good games out (Halo, Project Gotham, GTA etc.), and the S controller is amzingly comfortable despite it's initial apperance.
 
PS2, Halo and Ghost Recon will probably come to PS2 like Splinter Cell did. PS2 comes with a network adapter and a game for $279.99 Canadian. Cheap.
