Buying a new xbox

I'm thinking about getting a new Slim Xbox especially since im hearing about a $99 one with kinect but how do I get the stuff off my old elite? Is there a way to swap the harddrives or do I need one of those transfer cables? I'm hoping to do this for mothers day for my wife and I know it will be more expensive than buying the new Xbox and kinect combo for $300 but I am getting afraid our 5 year old elite is getting ready to die and can't blow the full 300 now.
