Hello folks!

My old 40GB Fat PS3 Blu Ray laser bit the bullet a few weeks ago. I was hoping to search about to find a replacement (long out of warranty) but there is very few that are compatible with my chassis build.

So I've decided to buy a new Slim PS3. But heres the question....

Do I:

A) Remove the hard drive from the old PS3 (Upgraded to 320) and put this into the new PS3

B) Backup the system and restore onto the new PS3

C) Use the Network cable transfer method

Which would be best, I've never done this with a PS3 before and clearly I want to get it up and running ASAP without a lot of running about having to be done....

Cheers guys!

Hey i might be able to help ya.
I don't think option A would work as you need to format the HDD when fitted into the slim model therefore erasing all your data.
I have done this process before with your option B and it worked fine ,takes quite a while to tranfer everything over depending on how many GB of data you have, but as you have a 320 HDD i'm guessing you have a lot of stuff on there so make sure to allow an hour or so for the transfer.

Never tried option C so wouldn't know if it's any quicker.

Hope this helps.

The direct transfer method (option C) is the best one if you want everything on your new PS3. I just went through this same thing on the 1st when I grabbed an Uncharted 3 PS3. The direct transfer will move everything to your new PS3, protected saves and purchased games included. If you do the back up method, some things won't get moved plus it will take a bit longer first backing up then restoring. It took about 1.5-2 hours to transfer from my half-full 80GB, that includes all the setup steps and actual transfer. Just make sure you follow all the instructions like deactivating the old system from each account so that you can move anything you've bought and aren't tying up one of your activations on a system you won't be using. The manual should have all the instructions, or you can find it on the PS3 site. There's also some on-screen prompts. All in all the process was painless and my new system functions exactly like the old one.

Brilliant! Will defiantly be giving that a whirl then!

Thanks for the replies lads, hopefully all the saves will stay intact!

The "A" method is not even possible.
I used the "C" method, it took me about 10-11 hours for 180gb if i remember well. But all of the data was Game data, PSN games etc etc, (protected in other words).
It transfers everything (and i do mean everything perfectly) even the e-mail at the PSN login page, the only thing that it doesnt transfers is the PSN password.

A minor thing is that you'll either have to use 2xHdmi Cables or you'll have to switch the HDMI between the 2 ps3's, cause you'll have to confirm the transfer.
