Following on from the very popular Buzz games on the PS2, the PS3 version is out tomorrow (and I certainly intend to get it), coming in a standalone version to allow you to use the controllers from the PS2 version or packaged with wireless controllers.

The game itself consists of five quiz channels...

  • Movies & TV
  • Lifestyle
  • Sports
  • Music
  • Knowledge

....and a quiz can consist of questions from a single channel or be mixed from all the channels. Its not yet clear if you can pick the channels to mix, say 'Music' and 'Movies & TV', if you just want those. It does however have 5,000 questions over these five channels, which should be enough to start.

However add-on quiz packs are going to be made available, in fact some are up on the store today (the day before launch), these being....

  • Australian Culture *
  • French Culture
  • German Culture
  • Italian Culture
  • Spanish Culture
  • UK Culture *
  • Rock Legends *
  • Sci-fi Movies *
  • Videogames

...now only the ones marked with an * are on the UK store at present, but the full list is taken from here....

...each pack consists of 500 questions and is priced £3.49. I may download one in the near future to see how they look in terms of value for money. However what could turn out to be the most fun will be the ability to create and share quizzes with other players. The on-line side not only lets you play against others, but will allow you to create, upload, download and score quizzes. If done in a similar manner to the Singstar community it should be good (and I'm a damn sight better at quizzes than singing).

So pointless game-show nonsense or fun for all?

My opinion is the latter and by tomorrow I should be able to let you know, but what you you lot think?

I'll be picking this one up too. I have Mega Quiz and Robo jam or whatever for PS2. not sure how latency is going to be a factor for online play.

Im thinking about it, I really did love to original and wireless buzz'ers will be a god send, but with me already getting FC, I think this is a bit too much gaming for me to wrap up, as im still playing GTA4 and MGS4.

Will let you know tomorrow. :)

This looks really promising, especially the ability to create your own quizzes. 👍

Like SingStar, it looks like for those of us in the States we will have to wait several weeks for Buzz to come out over here. In the meantime, I'd really like to hear what others that get have to say about it. 👍

I'm getting Ferrari Challenge and Buzz tomorrow, and still playing BF:BC and MGS4 (and SSHD - but I'm rubbish at that - no trophies for me - yes THAT rubbish).

Sleep is highly overrated, but at least this lot should keep me busy for quite a while.

Got my copy today with the new buzzers, I was glad to see they even give you the batteries and a little bag to keep them all safe in, a nice little touch. I think I'm just going to download the extra questions too. Tomorrow is games night so four player buzz and then a round of golf. I'm going to try and get some FC in tonight and then at least I will have kicked off the games :) but space is running low on the PS3 so I may have to remove some old games I don't play as much.

I agree about the sleep issue, but getting up at 5am, set off to work at 8.30am, then get to work for 9 and then get home at about 7.30pm then game till the small hours, I quickly get run down, hence why im off till this monday on the sick as got a nasty virus. :grumpy:

OK I've had a good mess around with Buzz and it gets a big thumbs up from me.

The on-line sofa-to-sofa is great fun, but playing against a friend (or my wife as I did in this case) is the most fun with this.

The range of questions is excellent, the wireless buzzers work stunningly well and its just great fun.

If you like quizzes then this one gets a strong recommendation from me, add in the downloadable quiz packs (I will let you know what these are like when I hace sampled one - most likely the Rock Legends one) and self-made quizzes and it looks to be a stunning package overall.

A great on for getting non-gamers involved as well.

Here's what you money gets you....

...the score.

9/10

Its been a good day for games for me today.

I remember playing the PS2 version of this several months back.

It's pretty good, but the appeal wore off very quickly for me. If you play with friends all the time it'll be better, but I don't see playing it on my own.

To be honest I would agree with that, the sole mode holds little appeal, that is however the advantage of the on-line 'sofa-to-sofa' mode. While not as fun as playing against someone in the same room as you, it is a big step up from just playing against the game.

Scaff I've been done, your little bag has got the buzz logo on it!!!! mine is plain red :(

and I totally agree with the comments above, this game needs to be played with other people, but the addition of online will be a good thing, Im going to get all the question packs online tonight. I've had a quick one player game and the graphics, while simple look really nice and the game is slick, and the wireless controllers like you said work really well.

The whole package is very well put together, my wife (who is alone in the house in not liking gaming) now has two favourite games, Singstar and this. The game show element is just so well done and the extra match types you get in the 'play with a friend' modes are so much more fun than those you get on-line and much more fun than the solo mode.

If you have friends (either on-line or in the 'real' world then this is great fun.

Thanks for all the great info. One quick question though, is it possible to use the SIXAXIS/DS3 controllers instead of the buzzers, and is it also possible to have more than four players in a match (online or off)?

Thanks.

You need to use the buzzers, but they can also be used to navigate around the game itself, so once its up and running you will not need a SA/DS3 until you want to quit the game.

Four players is the maxium in game, but that's not to say that each buzzer can't have a 'team', Michelle and I were shouting at each other yesterday and we played on-line 'sofa-to-sofa'.

Got the question packs last night, the integrate with the main questions without making any obvious change to the main layout, I was hoping to be able to select the question packs separately but alas no go.

As Scaff said you need the buzzers to play, but you can if you still have them use the old wired ones instead of buying the the wireless ones, but for me the wireless is a huge plus as we play allot of four player games on a Saturday night. I haven't been able to get online yet as it always tells me the buzz severs are down.

I reckon they will eventually allow 8 player matches, as it states and I quote:

Wireless Buzz! Buzzers Quick start Guide
The USB receiver will pair with a maximum of four Buzz! Buzzers. To play with five to eight Wireless Buzz! Buzzers, a second USB receiver is required.

So I'm not sure if the game will support more players right out of the box now or if it will be an added function but with the statement above it sure sounds like it.
