I know its stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer...or words to that effect...

but what does it MEAN?

can i buy OEM software and sell it as part of a computer system to a client?

can i sell it on its own?

i would love a full explanation...Giles? Emad?...LM? Shannon etc etc??
i cant seem to find a satisfatory explanation on the net no matter how hard i try...

1)basically, it's the exact product but without all the fancy packaging. You tend to save a lot of money doing this but you may or may not get the manuals and drver cds. In the case of my hard drive and cd burner, I didn't get manual, cables, cds or the screws to mount it. The purchase of the cables and screws amounted to $6 for the good rounded cables. I got the manuals from the manufacturer's website. In the end, I still saved about $100 compared to Best Buy's packaged drive.

2) if you're starting up a store, you had best be purchasing OEM products through a wholesaler if you dont want to go broke...plus they take up a LOT less space in inventory because you no longer have boxes that are 5 times larger than the items inside.

3) yes, you can - tons of stores offer it because it's cheaper to them and they can sell it cheaper than the competition = more profit

hopefully that's good enough?

With software, I believe that you can resell it if you're selling the software as part of a package that you have built, but I don't think that you can resell the item on its own.

With hardware, it means you get the bare device, and perhaps a driver disk, and that's it. In other words, the presumption is that you know what you're doing.

So, basically, emad covered it pretty well, as far as I know.

aww ****, i didn't see that you were referring to software. To resell OEM software, refer to the vendor because it's hard to tell. If you install it into a computer that you're selling or install it as a service to customers, it's all good then 👍. The store I get most of my hardware from doesn't sell OEM windows unless it's with a full computer but then again they have a lot of other software OEM that doesn't need to be bought with a computer...
