I have an original 60GB fat PS3 with a 500GB HDD. All this discussion about YLOD has me concerned. My PS3 didn't get used much until GT5 came out, now I'm using it regularly. I'm thinking about getting a new Slim PS3. Can I take my 500GB HDD out of my fat PS3 and swap it with the HDD in the new slim PS3? Will all my files stay intact including my game saves (including GT5)? In theory it should, but I'm checking to make sure before I go ahead and discover some problem on my own.

PS: I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. I searched for awhile and couldn't find it. I'm sure it's somewhere on this forum though.

I looked there and couldn't find what I was looking for. That thread is about upgrading the hard drive with a fresh one and transferring all the data to the new drive via a backup up HDD. I already have a 500GB HDD that has about 100GB of data on it. I want to replace the console and keep the HDD from my old console. I want to know whether I need to back it up or anything or just simply pop the old drive into the new machine and go.

Short answer NO

But you can do a backup onto an external HDD then take the 500GB out of your "Fatboy" and install it into the "Slim" then load restore from external HDD.

You might want to just buy another 500GB HDD(or larger) for the slim.

I'm thinking that might be the easiest.

My 60GB might sell for more if I leave the 500GB drive in it.

Will GT5's save game transfer ok this way as well.

Yes it would. It's like making an image of the hard drive(As far as I know). I have also found this comment that it will save the copy protected games.
i've now upgrade my hdd about 3 times and each time i have not lost any data. i always go to Network > Account Management > Activate System after i restore my data. this should re-enable any copy protected save data and other drm locked media.

Only way to get a GT5 save on to another PS3 is through the data transfer utility.

Soon PD might remove copy protected saves with an update late December.

Backup Utility is used if you have a hard drive failure, the copy protected data will only go back to the PS3 it came from.

This is what I've concluded after researching. Do the data transfer, then backup to External HDD. Then I can put my 500gb into the new machine and transfer the data back to the 500. I believe that is the only way currently.
