Can I set my windows xp to windows 95?

I got a new windows xp system about six months ago. Right now i am dying to play command and conquer: red alert. When i try to install the game on my new computer it says it needs to run on a windows 95 format. A friend of mine told me that I can simply change the running mode. Can I? And how?
 
Yup, right-click the executable for the program>Click the "Compatibility" Tab>Under Compatability Mode check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and the select the appropriate OS and hit apply and ok. It should run but how well I'm unsure. If you need a screenshot of what I'm referring to I'll take one.
