Can leaving pits during a free run cause a black screen?

Whenever my friends and I race we tell people to stay in the pits when they enter the course. We have always been told that it can cause a black screen. I have actually seen instances where this is true. I've also seen plenty of people get kicked after being warned by the host for leaving the pits.

Does leaving the pits actually cause black screens? If so, why not give the host the option to disable the free run?
 
I'm pretty sure that not staying in the pits doesn't effect whether or not you get a black screen before a race. I host races from time to time, and I never tell any people in my lobby to get in the pits. I pretty much just let all the drivers cruise around a track before a race starts. I don't even remember the last time I even had one in my own lobby, but I do get black screens occasionally in other people's online lobbies. Which makes me think that black screens have to do with your connection, or something else. And disabling free run doesn't sound like it would work too well because players enter free run to get onto the track so when the race starts, they would be entered in it. Without free run, no one could enter a race.
 
There's not really a clear answer on what causes black screen, or any number of other things.

But, I do know that some hosts have been pushing the "get in the pits" thing now, particularly when the room is pretty full & there's lots of cars scattered about the track in free run, because they've noticed less problems that way... or at least they have noticed it seems less likely to cause a problem.
Has it been proven? I don't think so. I don't know if there's any way to know for sure.
But it's a small thing to do if the host asks, and maybe it might help. So what the heck.
If someone's nice enough to run the room, & they think it's better if I'm in the pit during the race countdown... fine. Hope anything helps the connection issues at this point!
 
I guess by the words "free run" I mean leaving the pits after you enter the course and before the host starts the race. By disabling what I call "free run" I mean disable the ability to leave the pits once you enter the course. I hope that makes sense.

Also, the black screen would happen right after the countdown just before the race starts. We saw a lot of this after the 2.02 (I think) update but things have gotten much better since. I'll let this thread simmer overnight and check back tomorrow evening.
