Can others use your created livery?

As the title says really! I had a comment left on one of my liveries that said "thanks, saved me the effort - looking forward to using this!" Now i'm fine with sharing my work for viewing purposes and for others to maybe get some ideas from, but to use? No way, I spent many hours on each livery I've created (approx 100 high quality replicas) and don't think others should be able to just take a whole livery! I really hope this isn't the case.

What a wonderful community. Just don't share them, keep your highly precious replica liveries for yourself and accept oblivion. /End of thread. :P

I spend many hours on each of my liveries, and I share them all, and i think that seeing one of them in a race, driven by someone else, would be excellent.

In saying that, each to their own. If the OP doesn't want others to use his liveries, that's his prerogative.

thats the christmas spirit!
but seriously, share them as a screenshot if you dont want other people using it. although it totaly escapes me why you wouldnt want that. to each their own

Because I don't think others should be taking credit for your own hard work, a rule that generally applies throughout life, but I'm not sure what Xmas has to do with It??
For example in a group 4 race it's nice to run a unique livery on a Lambo or Aston in a sea of yellow Meganes!

You can publicly share your liveries for others to use (which I sometimes have) but you don't have to. Never seen anyone else using my liveries online but it would be cool if someone did.

wait, you didnt mention that somebody is taking credit for your work. you just said they are using it - which isnt the same thing at all.

(christmas is in the spirit of giving and sharing)

anyway, just dont share your liverys and all is good.

If you are assuming that the mere act of using a livery amounts to taking credit for it, then I guess your only option is to not share them.

If, on the other hand, you are only concerned that others will explicitly say that they created the livery, then that is another matter. In that case, having many people using it and having photos of them out there actually proves them wrong- if it is shared, it would be easy to find in the user profile. If it isn't, no one else should be able to have pictures of it in scapes. It's not a 100% guarantee but it's something...

Unrelated question, but do you make all your decals you use in your liveries yourself?

I can add that there is many ways to "guarantee" the credit of you livery.
- You can active the driver name option on it, so you PSN ID will always be part of the livery.
- You can add a sticker you did and that no one else use, juste like @MMX does on his liveries.

Also, if someone takes credit for a livery he didn't make, it is usually easy to see if the livery exists in his gallery or not.
The drawback is if you don't share your liveries, and only take pictures of it... then we people will think that you don't really did them ;)

I can also say that if I see someone using one of my liveries, I'll be very proud. That way I know that he actually likes it enough so it deserves to be on his car, and that it was not just another "like" when browsing the liveries to get the achievement.

I would be absolutely delighted to see me race against someone else who has downloaded my livery since I see it as a form a flattery and appreciation for my hard work. I do not see it as stealing, since the service is free and we are all getting our decals either from the game or someone else's hard work of uploading the logos.

However, I do agree if the OP takes screenshots and sharing photos if he does not want others to download and use them.

Has anyone actually used one of the OP's liveries?

I'd consider it a complement personally but mine are so crappy I'd be ashamed to share them :P

Great point, @Cytoria! I never noticed @MMX does his own watermark for his liveries until you mentioned it. I may want to start doing so. I have already one person I have seen create a replica too similar to mine. I would like to differentiate between the both of us since we both worked hard on our versions and I never want to accuse or be accused of stealing someone else's work, even if it is only a coincidence.

Even if the person has a livery which is very similar to yours, that means that he also put the same amount of time as you to do it, since we can't use any part of the liveries we see.
EDIT : I misread but you already said "we both" work hard.

The only way to people to "steal" your job, is when you create stickers for your livery, then share them. Then, they only have to put them down to have the same render. But it is very easy to use your own decals without sharing. And I tip my hat for those who share all of them, just like @syntex123 does we he creates a livery.

I started putting my MM logo on all my liveries, mainly as a way of signing my artwork. Pretty obvious I enjoy doing them, and while I have kept a few to myself, I have shared a bunch, and would love to see my work on somebody's car.

PS. I've been in graphic design in some shape or form since I was in high school, but came up the the MM logo in junior high. It's evolved some over the years, but like Frank's hot sauce....I put that 🤬 on everything. I have a vinyl cutter, so even in real life that logo gets used a lot.

I understand it is hard to tell if someone "steals" another's work since we all put in an amount of time on these liveries and the thought processes between two people are different, as I mentioned in my post. But, I feel people are nonetheless touchy on the subject as the OP has brought, even if this is a free service where we are doing it for the community and for fun. Also, when a person sees two liveries by two different people, a person may question who inspired or was influenced by the other artist. This may merely be based on the perception of the member viewing the liveries together, but perception can be key nonetheless.

Except the OP is talking about replica liveries...

It is obvious that I don't want to put of lot of time in a livery if I've already saw a great one on my friend's list.

But as I make of lot of replicas (it is too hard for now to create my own design from scratch), it is also guaranteed that I will find someone else close to my result. My only way to skip that is to do the best I can so I'll have no regrets. Since we already quoted him, @MMX Cusco is great, but there are a lot out there (and I will not talk about Calsonic R32 or Mobil1 NSX). What bothers me is when I see a good livery without likes whereas an average one but which was at the good time at the good place is in the top views.

Then what you said makes no sense lol... you can't be inspired by someone else's replica if you are making the same replica... you're both just trying to copy the same real world livery... if anything, being able to see other peoples work should inspire you to make your own replica better than the rest

I agree. But, you can be inspired by someone else's replica if you are working on the same replica and it is posted at the same time you are making your own version. For example, the FINA BMW Pace Car I created was a pain to replicate because I was having a hard time with the blocked stripping. However, at approximately the same time, I noticed other FINA BMW replica liveries being posted with very similar layouts giving me the desired effect I want. I do plan on going back to make changes to it based on the replica liveries because I am inspired to do so and make it better.

However, like I mentioned, as non-sensical as it is, people's perception can be finicky when looking at what others produce, no matter what type of livery or artwork it is. I personally do not care how the liveries get created or who or what was the original influencer or inspiration is, as everyone on this forum has created some fantastic replicas, tributes and liveries. I do feel that we all inspire and influence each other in one way or another as we are pushed to improve our skills.

I've never seen anyone using one of my liveries, but I love sharing them, like others said, I'd find it very cool if I saw someone using one of my liveries online. It'd be different if people could edit your liveries and then post them as their own, but if they just want to enjoy my take on a car, by all means!:gtpflag:

@Cytoria, does the PSN ID not change for each person using the livery? I was under the assumption it did, but never investigated. In that case I think most of mine carry my name:D

i would also love to know that for sure, i thought it did change for everyone - same as the racing number changes.

Sorry for my late replies - It's not out of ignorance - currently in hospital after a bowel operation. Anyway, just to clear up a couple of things (Sorry I can't reply to all) Yes, i make my own decals - a rewarding process. I may have missed some points from my original post - my apologies, I'm very new to all this forum stuff and didn't quite grasp the depth of detail needed. The original post was about someone who commented on one of my shared liveries then took a scapes picture and claimed it was their work. I didnt realise people could use your work in their own garage, I just thought they could like and repost. So when i saw it I was very surprised. Anyway, hope that clears it up a bit and thanks to all for the replies - its turned into a very interesting read. Hope to be back playing the game soon and i have had some great ideas for liveries while laid up!

Ive only done a handful of liveries, and they're nothing of the standard I see on here. I was really surprised and chuffed to see one in the wild on a scapes photo. I personally don't have any problem sharing my work. I've done 100's of decals and see it as my way of contributing to the community.

If they truly are claiming credit for the livery (and not just the photo) you could post a comment on the photo correcting them. If you still have the livery shared, others will easily be able to verify that it is indeed yours by viewing your profile.

Is that person listed as one of your followers? I wonder if you can remove/block people from following you...
