I'm looking to buy a new rain jacket and I thought some of you might give an advice or two on waterproof jackets.

I've been looking at a couple online; one The North Face and one Marmot. They both seem pretty good, and their price is not too high. I'd like to find one that's fairly heavy light, hooded, and pockets are a must.

These are my first 2 candidates:

The North Face Venture Jacket

Price = 97.99 USD

Marmot Precip Jacket

Price = 97.50 USD

Something like that would be OK. I have rain jackets, but they are heavy and way to warm for the place that I'm going, so yeah, I'm looking for something like that.
Ohh and yeah, under $120 USD is WIN.

Any suggestions?

I think pretty much anything you get will work just fine. You can either get one with insulation and all the warm fuzzy stuff or a shell that does nothing but stop rain. I would suggest the shell unless it is really cold outside because you can always wear something underneath it.

I think either a Marmot or a North Face will be best seeing that REI (our outdoor store) carries only those and their own thing. I would say go try them on and get a feel for them. Maybe ask a sales person who works with them. If you just go for the one that looks coolest/matches the best you would be fine.

Unless you are a serious backpacker, your rain coat shouldn't matter that much.

An umbrella?
Thank you for trying?
Do you guys get Regatta over in the US?, they make pretty nifty rain jackets...

Ive got some stuff from them including a waterproof lightweight... back in the Duke of Edinburgh Award days!

Nice, but I see that they only have 1 hooded waterproof jacket. Basically you get what you pay for the jacket because it's kinda simple, but cheap. 👍

I'll be in a place where it rains a lot, and the climate is not too cold. I'll probably end up choosing one of those two. I just had to look for the best jackets on-line and then look 'em up in the store.

I personally like these Relwen jackets, but they aren't sold all over the country and can be quite pricy. A quick search on Google came up with one Anorak at Steve Allen for nearly $300.

I'd say North Face. You really can't go wrong with that. Have you compared them to Patagonia and Columbia?

Am I in the minority for grimacing at the thought of spending more than $40 on something I'm going to wear? I'll never understand spending so much on clothing/shoes/whatever. :indiff:

For the rain, give me a simple hooded windbreaker and I'll be happy.

I've been looking for some good fitted fleece Jackets and so far North Face has been the best but also $$$

Here are my favs so far. (I'm not sure if these are the same ones I've been seeing in stores for $100)

I do like this one for some reason too.

I've got a light The North Face waterproof shell. It's excellent. Hood, at least 8 pockets, including one with a headphone cable hole. It's breathable, and it doesn't get me too hot. It was around £180 though.

I ended up getting a Salomon Snowtrip 3 in 1 Jacket as a late Xmas gift. I posted this link in here because it's a different color than the black I got so you can see the detail. It's a great jacket because even the liner is a nice jacket. It was $210 after 25% off.

If its nice, I'll spend a lot of money on it. I know, I'm crazy. I think the most-expensive piece of clothing I own (as of now) is a Spider Ski Jacket, and that was $110 about a year ago.

Generally speaking, I refuse to pay more than $50 for any article of clothing, shoes included. Depends I guess... I did buy a $70 shirt at Armani once...

If you have any kind of existing light jacket, you could water-proof it yourself with 2 cans of water-sealant spray. Essentially makes your jacket weatherpoof if it's a winter one. I did that, and 5 washes later, it still keeps water from soaking the jacket.

I think Footlocker sells it, and I'd bet a hardware or camping store does too (they spray it on tents and stuff for rainstorms etc).

I think that there are some items of clothing it's worth spending significant money on. A coat that you're going to wear all the time is one such example. Hiking boots are another. And a good suit is a third. Everyone should have a good suit, and if you don't believe there's a difference, try on a £70 suit and a £250 suit within half an hour of each other. I guarantee the more expensive suit will fit better, and will make you feel better.

And I'm one of the least clothes-conscious people I know.
