i've seen them on some rally cars, several mid-engine cars, ricers, and in need for speed underground. i understand what they're for in mid-engine cars since they act the same way as hood scoops by blowing cool outside air directly into the engine. but WHY are they in front engine cars? is there a functional purpose? or is it just to make the car that much more ricey? or is it a bit of both depending on the situation? it has always intrigued me as to why they would be needed and seeing it in need for speed increased my curiosity further.

thanks alot

My thought on them, in a FF car, is to provide the driver with cool fresh air, as race cars usually don't have HVAC systems anymore.

I could be completely wrong though.

Well.. IMO Roof Scoops just make the car more stylish... I really can't see any functionality for them other than on MR cars...

crud.. boom beat me to it..

When used in Front engined racecars, it's to cool the interior, which is the case for a WRC car, for instance. On a mid/rear engined car, especially a normally aspirated engine, it's to provide air.

No function whatsoever on a street car, aside, of course, bling bling, which, as we all know, gets ya the girlies.

yeah I also think it's to bring in fresh air to the driver i mean why not?

Considering those "scoops" are stick-on, they don't serve any other purposes than to add drag, look ridiculous, and get you some *****. Kinda like those aluminium wings.

in rally cars, i can see the thing being used for cooling the drivers...but why must morons add non-functional, drag inducing, ugly parts to their already ugly *tricked out* cars?

got confirmation from someone else that the reason for rally cars having it is because closed windows, hot weather, no AC. i still don't see why people would add it to a corvette....i've also seen it on pickups and several, several great examples of over-ricing

IMO they serve to feed air into the engine, as do side scoops. On FF cars they help put fresh air into the car. On rally cars I think it is to reduce the amount of dust and dirt that gets in the the 'scoops' and onto the engine. For ricers it just makes them look 'better', but i sure some have a genuine reason.

I saw some guy with a yellow CRX who had a roof scoop....he put it on all crooked it  I guess you could use the scoop as a trash can, just throw candy wrappers in there

I saw a Barry Boy with a 4" exhaust pipe made out of grey PVC drainpipe, gaffa-taped onto his existing exhaust pipe.

People are odd.
