Did anyone read the transcript to Friday's press conference? You can see it here - http://www.formula1.com/race/news/518/25.html

Apart from the nonsense that went on, one series of questions really caught my eye (EJ is Eddie Jordan):

Q: You said before you never would take charity from another team. Who paid your leasing rates for the trucks in Barcelona?
EJ: I don’t actually know that and I don’t know anything about who pays leasing rates. There is all sorts of people who pay different sponsorships.

Q: Okay, so you would swear it, never to get money from another factory or another team to pay your trucks?
EJ: Trucks? Sorry, I think we are really losing the plot here. Can we please try and keep on the subject.

What the hell was that about?!? What exactly is going on over there at the moment?!?

Things are, it seems, a bit mad...

Ecclestone: Stoddart has no place in F1
Formula 1 supremo speaks his mind over F1's minnows

Following the ‘fighting fund' feud at yesterday's Montreal press conference, Bernie Ecclestone has said that Minardi team owner Paul Stoddart should not be in Formula 1.

Stoddart is fighting for the payment of a £5million fund that was proposed by Ron Dennis in January to help the small teams, but dependent on rule stability which subsequently did not materialise. The F1 power-broker said that the world's pinnacle motorsport series is not the place for enthusiasts.

"Frankly, I was trying to push them [Minardi] not to race this year because he [Stoddart] shouldn't be in Formula 1," said Ecclestone. "You see the sort of budgets needed – $300 or $400m dollars – and he is saying he needs $10m to finish the season.

"I did say in Austria last year that they should p*** off, and I said at the end of the year that they should. But it is easier for me to say than for the guy to do. He is an enthusiast and he loves his racing, but we are a big professional business and can we afford enthusiasts? The answer is no.

"In the end, if you lost a Ferrari or a McLaren it wouldn't be good but if you lose somebody that far down the grid it really doesn't make much difference. It's not good to lose anybody, but it's better if they don't make it, that they go in a gentlemanly way – like most teams that have stopped.

"If he hasn't got the money he shouldn't be competing. It's like if you started a business and then things go bad and you are asking your competitors 'Please can you give me some money to help me compete against you?'"

Ecclestone added that in his opinion it would not be a disaster if F1 was reduced to less than 10 teams.

"We don't need 10 teams, we are happy with what we have got. We used to have 16 cars," he said, before describing Friday's public spat as "all a bit silly."

"Stoddart believed that these people had got together and agreed to give him some money to help him stay in business," he added. "They say it was agreed subject to a lot of things and the subjects didn't happen so there was no deal. That's the bottom line. We are trying to sort it out. I have been doing this firefighting for a an awful long time and this is just another fire that has flared up."

But then...

Bernie to invest in Minardi!
Row over 'fighting fund' takes a new and exquisite twist

In a shock move, Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone will invest in the financially struggling Minardi team.

After saying earlier today that he told Minardi to "p*ss off" in Austria last year, the news has emerged that the F1 ringmaster has personally invested in the team in order to save it. European Minardi boss Paul Stoddart said on Saturday afternoon in Canada that he could not go into detail, and that at the moment there was no paperwork.

"The deal has been done on a handshake," said Stoddart, "and with Bernie that's good enough for me."

Stoddart says that it safeguards the team's future, this year and next, and added: "One thing you might say about my new partner is that he has a pretty good track record as a sponsor getter, so maybe Minardi could finally have the kind of budget and support that it has previously dreamed about."

Ecclestone was last involved as a team owner in 1989, when he sold his interest in the Brabham marque that he bought in 1971. Stoddart, however, said that it was probably more accurate to describe Ecclestone's involvement as that of a passive investor.

The deal, he said, came together quickly and had not been mooted before the Canadian Grand Prix weekend began.

Very strange...

I think that part of the reason that Stoddart is struggling so much to curry favour within the Pirahna Club is that he seems not to know when to shut the **** up. This causes him grief with getting sponsorship because he's known for his indiscretion. He needs to calm down a little, be more political, a lot more subtle. Then he might find things getting easier.
