The Canadian Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar, leaving North America with no grands prix next season.

The FIA issued on Tuesday the World Motor Sport Council's decision, with the Montreal race absent for the first time since 1987.

The governing body confirmed an 18-race calendar, including a summer break thanks to having moved the Turkish Grand Prix from August to June.

The WMSC also agreed to give FIA president Max Mosley the authority to deal with the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) for the introduction of "radical measures to achieve a substantial reduction of costs in the championship from 2010."

"Failing agreement with FOTA, the FIA will enforce the necessary measures to achieve this goal," said the FIA in a statement.

"It was further unanimously agreed to allow Formula One teams to equalise engine performance across the field for 2009, pending the introduction of cost-saving measures from 2010," it added.

This is a real shame. The Montreal race always give a great spectacle and has become one of the few classic circuits on the calendar. Lets hope it's just a temporary measure.

With all these new circuits, it stands to reason that a few familiar faces will have to make way for them - I only hope that Montreal will be back in the schedule soon, perhaps at the expense of Valencia... considering that Spain already has a GP, it seems pretty hard to justify keeping two in the same country when the whole of North America now has none... still, sad to see it missing at all. It always provides a good spectacle...

It's probably because of the deteriorating surface.

Indeed, the quality of the asphalt left a lot to be desired... Honestly, because of this, I'm not surprised Canada has been taken off of the calendar...

But wait, wasn't a new asphalt layer on its way?

I think it's a real shame. I'm a fan of the tracks that present different challenges to drivers. In racing and spectacle terms, that Valencia remains and Canada does not is a travesty. However, as we all know, it's all about business, and Montreal has struggled to come up with the financing for a while now.

Ahh thats a shame :'(

It always gives a great race, what are they removing next? Monaco? Spa? :(

NOOOOOO!!! :ouch:

And i even had plans to attend the 2009 GP because i was not able to make it this year:indiff:

They should have dumped Valencia regardless because its boring as hell and in my opinion, it was an utter failure for a new track. But now taking away Montreal and keeping Valencia takes my disappointment to a whole new level :guilty: :dunce:

Saw this coming after this years GP....horrible track conditions. I do hope it returns again though as it is a great track.

If Montreal was the sacrafice for Abu Dhabi.....Abu Dhabi better be damn good.

Yes, give us more boring tracks and drop all the good ones. Maybe they can add a "street circuit" in the middle of the desert...

Why did they resign Magny-Cours, and get rid of Montreal? At least Montreal has something interesting happen every once in awhile, Magny-Cours is always boring.

The key is undoubtedly the shocking track management, you can't have tarmac ripping up in the middle of the race!

Wow. Le Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve is one of the best tracks on the F1 circuit. I can probably understand if there's some kind of surface issue (as Do You Race?) mentioned. Canadians know and love their racing (as do my own American folks). It's a great shame to not see F1 racing in the shadow of downtown Montreal.

Wow, I was contemplating watching them at Indy and then they dropped it and now this.

Well, I guess I just get to watch the few races that they show every year on broadcast TV and ESPN.

This is disappointing. I was really planning on going to Montreal in 2009 since they already took away the USGP, and now there are on options for me to see a race next year.

I just hope Abu-Dhabi isn't another Hermann Tilke super-boring-super-circuit. Montreal has character.

Shame. Le Circuit Gilles Duceppe always provides entertaining races. Though the track is in really bad shape, so it is not surprising at all.

And the FIA wonders why most of us Americans don't follow F1...

To my Canadian neighbors: I encourage you to check out the IndyCar races at Toronto and Edmonton next year!

I hope the IRL tries to get a race at Montreal next year too!

That sucks to hear. 👎

Ahh thats a shame :'(

Oh no! Don't remind them Alex!!!! :banghead:
I think Spa may get the boot as well sooner or later, but I think Monaco is here to stay in F1. I don't even it consider it to be F1 if there was no Monaco. :indiff:

Why did they resign Magny-Cours, and get rid of Montreal? At least Montreal has something interesting happen every once in awhile, Magny-Cours is always boring.
I disagree, Magny-Cours may be boring to all of us (me included) but it really deserves to be there because of the FIA. I mean the FIA headquarters is in France, so it would totally be rude not to include a French GP. Besides, its not like its really that bad of a track unlike some of the newer circuits.....

Anyway, its sad to hear that there would be no more races in North America for next year and beyond. But hopefully this gives Montreal some time to resurface the track properly and improve their facilities and for America to find a suitable place to host a grand prix......

Monaco will never be dropped, it is the link to the motor racing past. Spa has been dropped before and then re-instated and hopefully this will happen to Montreal, after all we need the wall of champions back.

They should use a track like Talladega Speedway for the USGP. Full throttle non-stop!

I'm actually trying to think of what would be a good GP course in the US.
