Can't get 1080i to work

Ok, I just bought a new TV that supports 1080i. Only problem is I can't figure out how to get it to work. I put in GT4 and selected the 1080i format and it's just a blue screen. I also can't get it to work for movies or anything.

I plugged the PS2 into the Component 1 slot, which is supposed to support 1080i and it won't work. The closest thing I can get to working is having a black and white picture with no color. The PS2 works fine plugged into the Input slots but I don't think you can run 1080i through those slots.

So I guess my question is what type of accessories do I need to buy to make this work where I can watch movies and play GT4 at 1080i? I assume I just don't have the right cords or something. I searched BestBuy.com for any PS2 accessory cables that look like they might make a difference and I didn't find anything.

Any help is appreciated.

There is no simple setting like that lol. There should be but there isn't. The "Format" button on the remote only flips through the default 480i formats. It doesn't give any 480p or 1080i formats. And I have been through every menu 100 times looking for any way to make it work. There is none.

I've been reading it all night and I haven't found anything. I guess I will just call customer service and hope they can help me. I even went on their website and it didn't have anything helpful.

I just went on BestBuy.com again and I found some DVD players that would hook up and work with 1080i. I'm thinking to get my PS2 to work I'm gonna need another cable or something...

No, if you've got a PS2 component cable (red, green, and blue), you've got just what you need. What is the brand/model of the TV?

Did you remember to turn on the component output in the PS2 System Configuration? You must have, if you have a component cable connection (needed for 1080i), and your can see the startup of GT4.

Is the component input you connected to a "High-band" or "HDTV" component input? Not all component inputs are; some are 480p & 480i, or "Normal-band," only.

Yep, that cable is exactly what you need. On your current cable all the video is going out of the yellow one. The cable you have linked to splits up the video into it's Red, Green & Blue components. Your TV needs component video.

My PS2 cable is red, white, yellow. Maybe that's my problem.

The TV is the Mitsubishi WS-55517.

The component input I connected to is compatible with all the formats (480i, 480p, 1080i). Perhaps I should go to Best Buy and buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...t&productCategoryId=cat08190&id=1082518999196

Sorry for all the questions, I've never been much of an electronics guy. :P
Yes, that is most definitely the problem! Red, white, and yellow cable is called composite, not component (which is red, green, and blue). That best buy cable will work perfectly - I think I've got the same thing. Also, be sure that if you've got a 5.1 surround sound system, use your PS2's Optical Audio out jack so it can deliver the digital sound to your receiver (and don't use the red and white jacks that come with that cable you bought). This will ensure that the surround sound you experience is exceptionally accurate and clean.

Hahaha. I didn't want to say anything...but If I did, I would've asked if you were sure you had component and not composite cables.

Ok I bought the cables and hooked up my PS2. The picture looks a lot better but I STILL can't figure out how to get to 1080i setting. I figured once I installed a compatible cable it would detect that and allow me to flip throught the 480p and 1080i formats but it still only goes through the 480i formats.

Here is a little info on the subject...

Format Signals (simplified):
480i signals: Available on Ant 1 and 2, Inputs 1,2,3 and Component 1 and 2

480p signals: Available on Component 1 and 2

1080i signals: High definition analog signals recieved on Component 1 and 2. (exact text from manual)

Formats available (all 480i format):
Standard

Ok so I just found what I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to do to change the format. Only problem is it doesn't work either. In the manual it says to highlight the device that you want to change the format on (from the device selection menu) and press Format on the remote. Pretty simple. Only thing is when I select DVD, which is Component 1 where I have the PS2 hooked up) and press Format it does NOTHING. I'm totally out of ideas.

Update: 1080i works with GT4. I still can't figure out how to make it work for a movie though.

I'm thinking it might not be possible to run DVD's on my PS2 in formats other than 480i because my PS2 doesn't want to run 1080i unless told to by a game or something and I have no way to tell it to run that without the help of a game lol.

The PS2 DVD player is 480i only. 480p is not needed, if you have a HDTV set that upconverts eveything to the sets native resolution. The device useed for that is often refered to as a scaler. The correct term is deinterlacer. There's no way to get 1080i from your DVDs on the PS2 since there are no 1080i DVDs.

There are DVD players that have a scaler built in that converts 480i to 1080i. But, it's simulated 1080i, much like GT4.

Your TV set has two wide-band component inputs, so there should be no trouble with inputing HDTV quality images. Unless, it's an HDMI only HDTV device.

Glad you got it working for GT4. 👍 Solid Lifters is correct, though - you cannot play DVD's on your PS2 at "1080i" so don't bother trying. :)
