How do you get HD mode to work on a Playstation 2?

I have an HDTV that can start in regular TV Mode and it also does 1080i, 720p. How do I set up my playstation 2 with Tourist trophy to recognize this.

I used the options in the game and the picture is not present in the HDTV mode on the phillips television (almost as if there is no signal). The playstation 2 and the HDTV are hooked up via component cables.

I have to switch the TV from SDTV to HDTV with a button, and it still doesn't work.

Very Frustrated

You might have to go into the PS2 options screen (boot time, before the game starts - start the PS2 without a disc) and set the component video mode. There are two choices, RGB and .... well, I forget how the other choice is labeled. You want the one that's NOT RGB.

Also, just to be sure, I know you said component cables are being used, but many people confuse the terms component and composite. Composite is the one that comes with the PS2, component is one you have to go out and buy, has 5 RCA plugs, three for video, two for audio. The composite set only has three connections, one for video and two for audio. Just making sure; I know you said component and you probably know what it is, but some folks don't.

In the game options menu, when you select HDTV, it should switch temporarily to 1080i by itself to show you it can. Your set should switch automatically with it. Is it blank at that point, then comes back after the 15 seconds? Be aware that the HD display is not universal throughout the game. Menus, garage, etc. are plain ol' 480i, and it switches to 1080i (or 480p if that's selected) for the actual racing. It stays in the higher selection throughout a championship series if you're in one of those. Nor does it save the HD screen selection, you have to set it every time you start. (That keeps you from forgetting about it, taking your PS2 to a friend's house, and getting no use from it on his standard TV.)

Next, the point at which you throw your HDTV set off the nearest balcony (or put it up on eBay), you may have a set which will not display 1080i on component, but only on HDMI or DVI inputs. I've heard people say they had such, but I couldn't say for sure why an HD set wouldn't show HD on any capable input. If you actually HAVE to switch modes manually (and I can't imagine that to be the case) you're not going to enjoy this at all.

Also, look for this question on the GT4 forum, it's covered at great length there, and this is the same graphics engine in TT.

Lastly, and should have been firstly, you have the North American game and a North American console, right? Also, does the game display 480p if you select that instead?

Edit - I started THREE paragraphs with the word "lastly!" Fixed it, but how did I get out of school 7th in my class? Well, it was a long time ago. . . . .

Actually, I had same problem. My input only accepts 1080i and 480p. The menus are 480i - I get no picture. First I thought it wasn't working, but realized you need a TV that will do BOTH 480i and 1080i on same input.

Wow, I just can't imagine a set incapable of switching modes based on the input signal. And especially a set that can't even do 480i on the input! Amazing.

But he's got the problem the other direction, it sounds like. He's using the menus, but can't get HD. Maybe it is the set. El Barto, borrow a set from a neighbor!!!!! That should work.:) Seriously, you might be able to find a friend with an HD set, take your stuff over there and hook it up, see how it works.

First of all they are component cables. They are not composite cables. The Red, Blue, Green cables with the audio also. The second thing is that I have to switch the television manually from TV mode to HDTV mode. I don't know if the television is not accepting the signal or not.
It doesn't say on the website for philips nor does it list it on the costco website where I purchased the television. I guess I'll just take the television back.

I've also heard of older ps2's not being able to output HD, like first gen, don't know if this was true or not... Also, it may be a problem having to switch manual, cause the game is constantly changing, as someone said, the menus are in 480i, the game is in 1080i (really dumb, and I don't like it at all)

i have a HDTV but nobody sells component cables for PS2 in my area, but i remember reading that in GT4 you had to switch to 1080i mode everytime you started the game.

My Toshiba TV switches modes automatically to the signal being fed. It displays 480i, 480p, and 1080i without me having to change anything. Also, my PS2 is a 1st-gen, got it for a quajillion bucks when they first came out.

El Barto's problem (if I read him right) is that his set isn't following the game's mode switch. Not only that, he can't manually force it to display the 1080i mode when he selects it in the game. It would be interesting to see what another HD source does on his set, like a digital cable or satellite box.

El Barto, if you just bought the set, I think you should return it. Any set ought to identify and display the mode it's being fed, without you having to remind it how to act. Ask the dealer if they'll let you hook your PS2 up to a display set and try it before you get another one. Or see if they can help you with the one you got. (Oh, wait. You bought it online. Oops.) Also, did you see the menu I was talking about in my first answer, setting the component cable mode on the PS2? If the PS2 is on RGB, the HDTV won't work. One's digital, one's analog, or something like that. (Possible display of ignorance :scared: )

First of all drift god, get a component cable now, it looks 10x better, i got a monster cable on ebay for like 30 bucks... :)

Try this el barto, just to set it in 1080i mode and then enter a race and switch your set into 1080 mode...

1) go to the screen options, switch it to 1080i, hit ok to test it out.
2) hit right once, and hit x (test to verify if you can see the image)
3) exit out of the menus and try to enter a race
4) put the tv in hd mode

even if it ends up not working still, you can just reset the ps2 and of course, the hd settings will be reset... :ouch:

And like wfooshee said, MAKE SURE the ps2 is set to component out mode in the PS2 menu when it turns on
