Ok, let me see if I can explain this. I just got a PS3 Slim 120g the other day. I have had GT5 since the release and had the same problem on my Fat 80g that died a while back. All of my PS3 games work fine online. ANd when I put GT5 in, I noticed it had 17 updates to install, so I went to bed and let it do its work. Now when GT5 loads up, it gets to the welcome screen and has me select my banner picture for the online lobby. I set that up, press ok, and the next screen comes up and says I need to set up an online profile so players in the lobby can see me, I press ok, and that screen goes away and nothing else happens, it is like it locks up, everytime. I cant even move the cursor around. Like I said, it done this on the old PS3 right before it died on me. I was up to over 60% done with the game, I lost all of that which is not a problem for me, but it wont work if I have the internet connection enabled. Any ideas? Thanks

Are you sure you are still connected to PSN ( it doesn't disconnect you) when getting on GT5? It sound exactly as if your updates are done correctly.. You should see a lot more message pop ups after those first two menu options

I am pretty sure I am, I wont know for sure until I can get back to it and check. But there is no reason it should be going offline.

If your updates didn't work right it will force you offline when you get on GT5

i have deleted them once and redid them so they have been installed twice. and it has
done this both times.

I just tried to install the game data to make loading easier. and it froze up at 17 mins remaining which is right after i started it. should I delete the updates, install game data then download updates, or does the one little scratch as small as it is on the disk cause this much of a hassle?

do it all over again.
1. clean your ps3
2. clean your disc
3. reset your router
4. reinstall everything
should work

now when i i start the game with no internet. the tracks wont load up.

I cant find anymarks on the disk. the game will not load up. I deleted all the updates, restarted the game, and canceled the update when it was found to load up the game, all goes well untill i try to load a series, none of the tracks show up and it locks up. I have a local video rental store in town that has a machine that makes disks look brand new for like 3.00 I think, should I try that then start over?

That sounds like a good option, since it's only $3. Then you can rule out whether it's the disk or not.

I took it into the store. Its only 1.99 but they told me they cant do blu ray. if it not the disk what else could it be? all my other games work fine.

The disc seems to be the common problem. Can you borrow one from a friend or perhaps a rental would work?

I will try something. Thanks for all the advice guys. I will post back when I get it figured out.

Try installing the game first, then the updates? I'd say that it might be the laser or hard drive, but you just bought it (brand new?).

Last resort is renting/borrowing a disk and seeing if that really is the issue.

Ok. I rented the game. tried to play. same issue, lock up after seizure warning. I went into system game files and deleted what was already there for gt5 under game data. VOILA! Game loads up perfectly (the rental). So I now have the ps3 wired to the router instead or going through the air, and I am up to update 13 now i think. So hopefully I will be back online with GT5 tomorrow.

If it's severe problems, I'd recommend a full factory restore/format on the PS3. It's the best way to clean your system of junk files and will help your PS3 run a lot smoother.

Edit: Deleting and re-adding files adds a lot of junk to the hard drive ESPECIALLY deleting and re-adding any type of Game Data (not save files)! Someone might think they're deleting something but they're not getting rid of all the data, they're just compressing it into small junk files.

Thanks Bluntified for pointing that out, that makes sense. I will consider that in the future. But after deleting the game data and dl'ing through a wired connection, GT5 starts up pretty quick now and goes right online to the lobby and works smoothly now. So now I know what the problem was, my disk is a goner. Dont understand how, I handle my disks with extreme care. My problem is solved now. I guess I will be in the market for a new disk. Thanks for all the help, this has been a great forum!
