cant set up PS3 online

Hi guys,
I have just undertaken the task of getting GT5p online after getting through all the classes.Can anyone advise how to set up PS3 online as I keep getting an error message sayin "ISP time out". I've gone through all the steps in connecting it according to the manual but it doesnt want to connect.(cable internet).Any help appreciated as I so want to get on and race.

We need to start from first principles.

Do you have:
An internet service provider
A modem/router
A Cat5 patch cable between modem/router and PS3 (or a wireless modem/router and PS3 wireless enabled)
 
On my setup I found that I have to connect my PS3 directly to the modem, it won't connect via the router. So if your using a router then that might be the problem and it's worth trying to connect it directly. Alternatively you can search for a router thats compatible with the PS3 (I'm being cheap so I just switch the wires on the modem over).

I have a ISP (cable internet through optusnet in Sydney Australia) and have connected the PS3 with the cable supplied in the PS3 kit directly to the modem (i have no router).I dont know what a Cat 5 patch cable is?
 
That'd be the cable you've connected between the modem and the PS3. I assume you've checked that other things, like your PC, can access the Internet?
 
yes Im using it now, I switch the cables when i try to go online with the ps3.Ive gone through the motions as per the manual and even set up my user name in the isp address (not sure if it was required as it said set to default....i think?) and enabled and disabled things to try to make it work.
 
sometimes having your pc connected to the net and just switching the cables over to you ps3 won't work. Switch the modem off and then on to connect with your ps3.
when your connecting the ps3 to the network is it confirming that its connected in the ps3 network setting menu .
Are you doing it manually or automatic.
 
i connect as you said and then use all the auto settings available.......i dont know what the whole proxy setting thing is though i have tried it both ways.Its gettin late and my patients has faltered, I may have to get my cousin to come over and try it in the morning as he knows a thing or 2 about isp addresses and all that.Thanks for your help guys and i hope to see you all on the track (online ) soon.
 
"user name in the ISP address"? Sounds like your cousin is the best option :-)

The simplest solution for you is just go get a router. You can get one for under $20 USD new.
 
After my uni degree in computer tech cousin spent 4 hours configuring and reconfiguing the PS3 and modem it ended up being a simple task of switching of the modem from the power source off before setting it up in the PS3 menu so it spits out an outfind/show ip address. we were just switching it on standby.BTW we race under the banner URUNDIESBROWN so hope to see u guys out there.

ye you did, like I said 3 grown men (one with a university degree in this field) thought that they switched the modem off/on.....but instead only put it in standby! Thanks for the tip, but next time could you please just come around to my place and fixit (I will pay cash!!!). Thanks again.

Crazy thing about university degrees: they don't teach you the practical things, like unplugging the power cord from a modem is the best way to truly reset it.

There are just certain things college courses cannot teach and you learn by practice.
