Oh jesus. They shot down my dreams with an M60.

Geico (New to New Jersey BTW) Wants ****in $6,000 a year insurance on the TBird.

Now I'm not buying a car that I'm paying 20x the price of the car to drive a year.
No god damned way.

Since I get a *REAL* car in June (Toyota Supra MKIII) I've put off the Thunderbird for umm. Ever.
It's just not worth it.

6k a year is just rediculous.
And its just for basic liabilty. (Required in Jersey. I've thought about driving uninsured. But then the handcuffs clicked in my head)

So, what does everyone else pay (And what company do you use?)

No way. No way in h*ll.

6 grand a year is $16.44 a day. That's more than you're gonna spend on gas.

My friend's '97 T-bird LX is insured for $7 a day (he told me). That works out to about $2500 a year. Much more reasonable. He lives in Massachusetts.

EDIT: Oh yeah, but he is not the primary driver. Just remembered that.
 
I'm also on my parents' insurance as the primary driver. I pay ~$1000 per year. ~$260 every 3 months. My car is listed as a luxury sedan... :odd:
 
£420 a year. For a group 14 (out of 20 - with 1 being a FIAT Panda and 20 being a Ferrari F40) car. I win.
 
I was getting a really good deal paying about $2700 Cnd a year (my buddy pays $4000) but prices are expected to drop big time, and I have a perfect driving record so I can be expecting to pay about $1500 :)
 
I'm only paying $2200 CND a year. I'll be getting the same drop as powripper too. Did you see the fake Flames season they're doing in the Sun? One of the writers is playing a full season with the Flames on NHL 2k5 and they're posting all the stats and everything. I think today was the first day they did it.

I guess Im pretty lucky over here as insurance depends on the value of the car.

So the more expensive the car, the more insurance.. :)

So if I get used EVO, costing US$40K, my insurance premium will be for US$40K .
It will be the same with any other car costing US$40K.

[rant]Ontario's auto insurance industry is run by the mafia. Seriously.

First off, the insurance rates for young people is nothing short of extortion. I was recently quoted at over $1,000 Canadian dollars per month to insure a '96 Sebring Convertible (it's value is under $10,000 Canadian dollars). I knew that it would be an expensive car to is aroundnsure, especially considering my age (17), but that is just ridiculous. My parents pay $800 per year to insure our cottage. And the cottage is on an island which gets frequently burgled due to it's easy access and isolation from the mainland. I'd be listed as a secondary driver (since my dad would have used it as a summer car), but it would be meaningless since my family owns 3 cars, and has 3 members. So, I would be considered as the primary driver regardless, which is absolute bull ****. And if I got a cheaper car, the rates would still be absolutely retarded. I'd still end up paying over 100% of the car's value in insurance no matter what I drove. And I am a very safe driver, I don't speed or tailgate, I check my mirrors, use my turn signals, and in general use plenty of common sense while behind the wheel. But, because of my age, I am instantly branded as an unsafe driver. Although it is obviously true that there are lots of teenagers who are poor drivers, people like me have to suffer because of the actions of other, irresponsible people who give good teenage drivers a bad image, and allows the auto insurance industry to walk all over us, using borderline discrimination. If the insurance companies tried to hike up the rates of female drivers because they are (for the sake of an argument let's say) less skilled drivers than men, they would face a publicity nightmare.

And it's not just young people who the industry targets, it's virtually everyone. My dad just recently had his rates hiked. Why? He had to fix his windshield because a pebble hit the windshield and made a small crack. So, he got it fixed through his deductible, and his rates increased by $400 a year for minor damage that was caused purley by chance. And if you get in any collision, regardless of fault, you can be guaranteed your rates will skyrocket. My dad's friend was involved in a collision where he was rear ended, and pushed into another car, causing front end damage. This collision was not his fault, but the insurance companies think so. So, if he was still driving around with insurance (he is not doing that because he doesn't want to give his hard earned money to these thieves), he would have to pay $8,000 a year for insuring a '2000 Ford Explorer, despite the fact he had a clean collision record prior.

I could go on about how cab drivers have to give 25% of their salary to pay for car insurance in Toronto, but I need to blow off some steam right now, the insurance industry in Ontario is the only thing keeping me from owning a car since it is mandatory. ****ing crooks.

Ouch! I pay less than that for two cars, on my parents insurance - of course. My '03 Cobra is ony $126/month, and my '95 Lexus GS300 is like $88/month, or some **** - both full coverage.

If it were my own insurance policy the Cobra would be around 7 bajillion dollars a month, and the Lexus around $200/month probably.

Yeah, it isn't the greatest. It reminds me why I shouldn't drive like a ********.

  • Accident involving only my car, Insurance paid me $6000 for the totalled 1995 Nissan Altima GXE
  • Speeding, 10 to 15mph
  • Wreckless Driving
  • Another accident, not at fault, no ticket recieved and the insurance company went after the other individual involved.

I've been ticket free since June 2003.

Suprisingly, the WRX is a pretty cheap car for me to insure. I was thinking about selling the car and buying a new, bronze colored Mazda 3 hatchback to save some money on insurance. After checking quotes on Progressive, I would only save $20 a month. Keeping in mind this would be on my own insurance plan, and I'd be paying about $450 or so.

I know I could find an older car and have insurance drop a decent amount, but I wouldn't be happy with the car.
 
My neighbor is getting rid of his honda accord, and getting a mercedes. Since he got caught driving DUI once :rolleyes: his insurance will be just over $6000 a year too. Sucks to be him :yuck:
 
I'm on my mom's insurance as a secondary driver and pay $300 per month. My brother is secondary driver on his car and pays $800 per month. In total, our insurance bill per year comes out to $12000 (canadian) per year. That's more than the combined price of both our cars :irked:.

It used to be 9000 per year b/c of my brother's tickets, but the a-hole broker submitted the wrong info to the insurance company and our policy was then cancelled. He refused to fix the error and to top that, there's only like 3 companies that will insure our entire now :irked:

That's... £848 a year for two cars... Both are group 17... I have use of my girlfriend's car for free (she's classed as a common-law partner) - so although we have a group 14 and a group 7 car, we pay just over £600 a year for insurance, combined.

I got a quote for my "next" car of £750 a year. It's a group 20. British and V8.
 
What are your current and "next" cars?

I don't need a car to commute so I use my mothers on evenings and weekends. It adds around £120 to her £380 a year.
 
A 1.8 V6 :confused:. I have never heard of a V6 so small.

But a Esprit will be a bit special 👍
 
Smallest production V6 ever - 1845cc. Nice, light engine in a nice, light car. :D

V6 lets 5th gear pull from 10mph to 141mph... :D
 
i wonder how josh got that working, my bro called my insurance agent asking how much it would be to insure me on a '03 cobra and hes said something along the lines of $2,600 for every 6 months, living in Cali.

i then asked him if there was a way that we can say my mom was the primary user, and the insurance guy said no its a specialty car and there can only be one insured driver...
i think thats BS and my agent is a loser.

BUT other than that i drive my 240sx for 150/month (got a deal with insurance :))

She insured a Caterham Super 7, and just recently a 1978 Lotus Esprit V8, that some guy bought off of eBay for 5G's (wouldnt happen to be you would it?). now thats a steal. paint it white and *BAM* you're james bond! ...i could tell u guys whats wrong with all your premiums and why your rates are all so high but holy crap i'd be here forever. About the age thing, (17?) you'r rates are high because statistically, male drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are the highest at-risk drivers in north america right now. as for the dude in Calgary or alberta, dont even think for once that you'r rates are going down. Alberta has the highest insurance rates in canada right now and there are no signs of slowing down, this is because the government issued new regulations and laws and stuff regarding New Brunswick, Alberta, and Newfoundland. The do it like every 6 months, my mom goes through more binders and paper than Xerox Co. . No problems for BC tho, they have ICBC. Alberta's rates are also way higher because...ALBERTANS CANT DRIVE. Theyre crazy. I had to go from some small hicktown in BC (elkford) to Calgary to catch a flight for Toronto and...holy crap. That, and you can acquire your license when you'r 14 :dunce: . if you have any specific questions just ask me, i can find them out from my mom.

I was under the impression that all Lotus Esprits, up until the V8 in 1998, were 4 cylinder and 4 cylinder turbos.

Insurance rate in Alberta are even more insane than in Ontario. Over the last year, rates in Alberta have increased by 50% (compared to a 30% increase in Ontario).
 
Im 20 with 1 ticket (5 over) and driving a 91 talon awd turbo and Im only paying about $1,000 USD a year. I use Citizens.
 
How the hell is your T-Bird 6k a year? And PLEASE say you don't mean the Turbo Coupe in your avatar!!! You're gettin ripped! I pay $700 every 6 months for my '86 5.0L V8 T-Bird! That's less than $117 a month and I'm the primary driver. I was quoted $1470 every six months for a '95 Thunderbird SC. Me being 19, and having a couple tickets and an accident under my belt that's still fairly low insurance. No T-Bird will ever cost a real hella lot to insure except mebbe the '02 and newer Blunderbirds. Couldn't tell ya about those.

Thunderbirds ARE real cars.
 
Well, there are many, many factors that insurance companies take into consideration, like:

-how old the driver is
-number of drivers
-collectors car/daily driven
-province
-accesability to parts and services
-purpose (racing, recreational, professional, etc.)
-cost of parts
-age of vehicle

and many others.
The age refers to whether or not you are an experienced driver, or an old driver with poor eyesight etc.

Number of drivers refers to how many people will be driving the vehicle, such as wife kids husband etc as a primary means of transportation.

Collector/daily driven refers to whether or not the person is actually driving it...or its sitting in his garage.

Province, this has to do mainly with the Federal Governments standards that many insurance companies are forced to follow.

Accessability to parts and services, this refers to how readily available a part is (a piston head for a 1968 2+2 Mustang Fastback will be easier to find than a door hinge for a Ferrari Enzo) and whether or not it is mass-produced.

Purpose, this is a large factor although it is mostly just for daily transportation, however, some insurance companies take into consideration as to where you live (more likely to get into a fender-bender in downtown Toronto than in a rural community etc).

Cost of Parts, once again this has a lot to do with whether or not you have an exotic or rare sports car as opposed to a Caterham.

Age of vehicle, this kind of speaks for itself, as most of you know cars rarely stay the same for any more than 10 years...unless its a Safari van...oh god. but anyway, if you have an older car you're more likely to have say...am tire blow out and cause you to spin in traffic or something like that.

Any of the above factors can contribute greatly to why your insurance is so high, especially if you have a combonation of 2 or more of the above. Hope this helped.
 
Yeah but you're lookin at a FOX CHASSIS '87-'88 T-Bird. There's basically infinite available replacement parts for any Ford fox. It's maybe a little sporty (mostly the Turbo Coupe) but really it's just like every other mid-size coupe except with rear-drive platform. If his T-Bird is in fact an '87-'88 Turbo Coupe it's a 2.3L turbo inline 4. I can't imagine that car possibly having insurance that high even if all the factors are against him.
