The Peugeot SUV 2008 Allure '21 is alright.

Let's be honest: no one is getting into a 129HP (96kW) SUV looking for performance. A diesel Atenza would wallop this thing silly with little effort, and faster commuter cars like the 205 GTI and CX-30 are rated much too high bone stock to fit under our weekly lobbies' PP limit, set 10PP above the featured car. It's slow, even by normal, everyday car standards, and there's just no getting around that fact.

But purely from a driving dynamics standpoint, the 2008 is pretty alright. If someone were to dump me into my rig with the 2008 already loaded in bumper cam, I wouldn't guess at all that I was in some big, tall, wasteful, poser SUV from the way it drives. It's incredibly lightweight for a car of its size and era, tipping the scales at a mere 1,192kg (2,628lbs)—lighter than many of the fabled 90s sports cars. It therefore stops nicely and turns in even nicer. And dare I even write it, I think it looks pretty cool too.

If I've any nitpicks, it really could do with an LSD. Most cheap FF family runabouts can get away with not having it because they're cheap and make no pretence about going offroad, but those don't apply to a tall SUV. Also, 2nd and 3rd gears are stupidly far apart, enough for me to wonder if I've accidentally upshifted twice several times, and had engine damage been simulated in GT7, I'm sure I'd have blown up multiple engines by now from downshifting it too early from 3rd to 2nd. Otherwise, it's pretty inoffensive, if not meh. And I suppose that's praise for an SUV in a racing game.

The 2008 is proof that SUVs don't have to be ugly, hateful things on the track. And that's all the value and meaning I think I'll ever get out of it in GT7.

The results are in; SPD has spoken, and the winner of last week's Single–Player Challenge is, unsurprisingly, Obelisk!

Though, given that the challenge was to elicit the biggest reaction from SPD, I wouldn't mind SPD showing us just how Obewan's car made him react...

Reactions is a surprisingly apt segue into this week's car, as when it debuted near the start of the millennium, its styling was rather controversial. As chosen by @Aiko_Mac , this week's car is the BMW Z4 3.0i '03!

2003 BMW Z4, because I seem to have a thing for German cars and this is another such car. The 03 Z4 harkens back to classic roadsters of the past being small and fun to drive, much like the MX5 but with a bigger engine. Its straight six provides the perfect horsepower for its size and will put a smile on the face of those who drive it. I liked this car in GT4 and was very happy when it returned to GT7.

Looks aside, with a straight six pumping out nearly 230HP through a 6–speed stick going to the rear wheels, the Z4 has garnered praise for its driving dynamics, much like the other BMWs of its era. With the E30 M3 winning our Car of the Year award in 2023, we might just be in for another surprising treat with the Z4.

We're going back to having a simple SPC this week!

Aiko_Mac

Challenge is to set a time on Nurburgring GP full course in a bone stock Z4 with fuel and tyre use set to X1.

I'm adding two other stipulations: Grip Loss on Track Edge set to Real, and Course Cut Penalty set to Weak.

Of course, we always welcome opinions, tunes, liveries, photos, videos, or stories about the car here on the the thread!

I've said a few times by now that my favourite sports cars are those that have around 200–250HP and weigh about 1,100–1,300kg. In plain English, I like sports cars in which their power doesn't completely dominate the experience, and are light enough to really chuck around and be a hooligan with. And by virtue of its specs alone, the BMW Z4 3.0i '03, with its 227HP and 1,290kg (2,844lbs), is already a good sports car in my book.

Indeed, the Beamer's has a very keen front end on turn–in, and its brakes are nothing short of phenomenal. It even has a 50:50 weight distribution! However, that's sadly where the good news end, as the rest of the car simply isn't as focused on sportiness as comparable rivals, and in the context of a sandbox video game, that makes the Z4 extremely hard to justify over its stiff and well–established competition.

Gran%20Turismo%C2%AE%207_20250713142018.png

The gearing is the most immediate thing that jumps out; despite only having to spread its modest 170kW across an ample six gears, the gear ratios are all so incredibly wide apart for some unfathomable reason. In our weekly races, there have been times my Z4 lined up alongside another car on corner exit, keeping more or less level with them until I make an upshift in the Z4, causing it to tumble away like sawn logs. These wide ratios also make many corner exits awkward, as it often feels like there's just no correct gear to be in; 2nd gear just causes wheelspin, and third is just gutless at low speeds. Despite having six forward gears, the only time I've ever grabbed fifth in the Z4 was down Bathurst's Conrod Straight, and it just feels like such a waste of a six speed box.

Gran%20Turismo%C2%AE%207_20250712190605.png

The suspension is also very soft for a sports car, and a great deal of care has to be taken to get it to bite into corners and to keep the rear end from fishtailing out of turns. And when the car does let go, it does so very suddenly, almost as if it were hitting the ends of its suspension travel even with just Comfort Soft tyres. Without the right pedal, it's also always the front tyres that let go first, instead of a more balanced approach to its limits. It's paradoxically not as lively nor easy to control as the much more focused sports cars that I much prefer over the Z4.

Gran%20Turismo%C2%AE%207_20250709213349.png

On its own, the Z4 is a pretty good sports car. It's just that, when it's competing against a field of my personal favourite cars like the 901 Carrera RS 2.7, Clio V6, S15 Silvia, and GR86, I hold it to much higher standards than most other reviews, and therefore being "pretty good" just isn't nearly good enough to sway me. The AP1 S2000 deserves special mention here as the most apples to apples comparison, being a late 90s/early 2000s open top FR sports car on Comfort Soft tyres by default. The S2K, despite being the wildest handling 1999 model, was just so much easier to control and play around with in the corners, and because of its close ratios, it devours the Z4 on the straights too. The kicker is that the S2K actually undercuts the Z4's PP rating by a microscopic amount stock for stock. In a racing game where everyday comfort and the refinement of a premium brand is completely lost and doesn't matter, there's simply no reason whatsoever to pick the Z4 unless one is already partial to it prior.

Gran%20Turismo%C2%AE%207_20250712190551.png

I suppose the argument can be made that, of the open–top cars in this performance range readily available in Brand Central, the Z4 is a unique proposition. Sampling the Z4 3.0i as–is just makes me wish we got the Z4M instead; I recall really liking that car in GT6. The base Z4 as we get it isn't as much BMW bringing a knife to a gunfight, but it is a bit like bringing a pistol to a machine gun massacre.

Heads will roll this week, as we're featuring TVR's only representation in the PS4 era GT games. Chosen by @jrbabbitt ,this week's car is the TVR Tuscan Speed 6 '00!

Well I gave it a go, and cold lapped it at 4:09.950

Also uploaded my lap to the Gallery, it's titled
"COTW TVR 12JULY25"
(I know i have the date wrong, it was just uploaded tonight...)
Clean, no penalties....as for the reason for this combination, I have been driving my road cars stock lately around Circuit Le Sarthe and the TVR in stock condition is a squirrelly handful on this course and just wanted others to give it a go better than my time and if possible try it on a cold lap.

You know what? That's a really convincing argument you made. I realise I was wrong.

It's MUCH worse than that.
If i can do a cold lap at LeMans with that time (4:09.95) without a penalty nor going off-track (and on a controller by a 62 yr old) it's all the evidence I need for a convincing argument....

  • also raced these so called coffins in heavy rain
  • SPD in the TVR: didn't even slip off the track or anything, earning a nice CRB with second (since I dunno I slowed down I guess)
  • didn't even get any form of recognition despite all those efforts

I literally @–ed you and RX8 after the first race at Brands, saying, "well held!"

And speaking of no recognition, every time I greet you when you show up in the lobby, you never return the greeting. I don't think you've ever liked one of my reviews, either. Or thanked me for running COTW.

Last week's SPC isn't the only thing K31th won last week; he also has the car choice for this week, and he's chosen quite the doozy of a car.

Why do I say this? Well, that's because it's our 2019 Beater of the Year, the BMW i3 '15!

For those unaware, K31th brought an i3 to a 5–lap race at Tsukuba when we featured the Peugeot 2008, taking a self–imposed drive–through penalty, and still finishing strong! How can such a strong car have been declared BOTY? Did it get better in GT7? Does the PP system do it favours unspeakable? Join us and find out!

K31th wants to know just how potent the i3 can be when it's in its element: short tracks. And to that end, he's crafted the following challenge for interested parties...

k31thc0m

if an i3 can beat a car like the mazda mx5, surely it can beat actual tuned sports cars. right?

try to finish as high as possible in the tsukuba clubman cup plus race (using sports hards).

With an i3 in any state of tune (limited to Sports Hard tyres), finish in as high a position as you can manage on the Clubman Cup+ event at Tsukuba Circuit on Hard AI difficulty.

...and no, k31th didn't mention anything about needing a Clean Race Bonus.

I sincerely apologize for choosing the TVR as COTW, next time i am asked i will choose something easier(?)

No one's mad at you for choosing it. The car is just a proper jerk, LOL
I agree it, in the stock condition that is used, is a handful and prone to unstable behavior and at the time i was asked i was in that car trying to win career races in stock condition and was not easy and therfore i wanted to see others try the Tuscan in that stock config and i got the expected replies of "what a bad car this was"
Again i apologize for inflicting this pain on the rest of the crowd.

@XSquareStickIt i do thank you for managing and doing all you do in the COTW, please keep up the great work and i will pick a better car next time...😃✔️✔️✔️

First of all, there's no need to apologise for choosing a car we end up disliking. The idea of Car of the Week was to shine light onto cars that might otherwise be overlooked in the car roster and perhaps find some surprises in there, and surprises go both ways. We won't really know for sure how good or bad a car is until we try it for ourselves, and in doing so, maybe we can also highlight why the car is bad, instead of just "car bad, eww".

Second, just because most of us dislike a car, doesn't mean you aren't allowed to like said car yourself, or that your feelings and opinions are invalid. The beauty of cars is that it's almost as subjective as it is objective, and speaking for myself personally, I love discussion and discourse about cars. It's been a long time since someone disagreed with and challenged my position on a car, and I honestly wish it happens more. It's healthy debate and good for the life of this thread.

As SPD points out, I have skill issues. I don't gel with nor understand the Tuscan, and I'm practically much quicker in cars that have substantially lower PP, like the 2002 Viper. Me saying "Tuscan bad" is more or less saying, "less skilled players may want to avoid it". But more skilled drivers might like it, and that's why voicing differing opinions matter so much to me.

So, long story short, you don't have to apologise for choosing the Tuscan. In fact, I want to thank you for stirring up discussion here

The BMW i3 is a prime example of why the PP system is considered to be so flawed, and how that can make cars unlikely sleepers.

20969921218860933.jpg

Rated at 166 HP and 2778 lbs, and coming ina mere 400.14 PP (as of v1.60), the i3's PP rating aligns it with the following cars:
Peugeot 205 GTI (396.19 pp - 128 hp / 1929 lbs)
Honda Civic SiR•II (407.11 pp - 167 hp / 2359 lbs)
Nissan Fairlady 240ZG (407.06 pp - 147 hp / 2227 lbs)
Honda Civic Si Extra (393.51 pp - 128 hp / 2006 lbs)

Just as a smattering of samples. You would think that the heavier EV would be on even ground with the petrol cars, right?

Wrong.

With the fact that EVs tend to have crushing, immediate torque, you wind up with a situation where the i3 is guaranteed to win a race if the max achievable speed on the track isn't any higher than 100 MPH.

Side note: the i3 is listed as having [n/a] ft-lb of torque. [a/n: 184 ft-lb for this year, according to Car and Driver]

Quite simply:
Can a 400pp car achieve 105+ MPH on the longest straight? Fair shot between the i3 and the petrol car.
What about 100? i3.
What about 110? Petrol car.

The single factor that makes the i3 such a case-by-case sleeper is the top speed of the car: limited to exactly 150 kph / 93 mph. And I think that alone is why the i3 is severely underrated, as the system considers top speed as a metric in its calculations.

Sleeper, but in very specific use cases.

"Well look who finally decided to grace us with his presence." Even though it's been almost a year, the snarky remarks came to hand as instinctively as changing gears in a stick shift. Only wish I could say the same about the Golf VII GTI I just stepped out of, silently hoping that the DSG doesn't explode mid–race on me, or for the damn thing to overheat in the desert heat here in Willow Springs, California.

"Hey, gotta let you have some of the spotlight, boss. Wouldn't want to be accused of stealing from the rich, now." Vic too, hasn't missed a beat. He might look a lot more threatening if he wasn't standing right next to a BMW i3 vandalised with sponsor stickers. The electric car from a decade prior looks about as serious as a golf kart someone slapped BMW badges on to hike its resale price.

"My neck hurts enough not having to hard carry all your slack. Gonna need me a new truck at this rate."

"Oh yeah. Which numpty did that to your Tundra?"

"Dunno. A pinkish purple S13 pit maneuvered me."

"An S13 did WHAT to your truck? Are you off your nut?"

I shoot Vic a confused look. Surely he's not suggesting I've gone too long without—

"Honestly, I think I'm more worried about the driver of the S13 more than you. Think they might've pegged it by now?"

"You know, you use way too much weird British slang. Esther complains to me sometimes when she's tipsy, says she has to look up all your weird expressions. You know she's not a native speaker. It's worse when she's in Mexico and shooting me messages at weird times."

"Oh. Uh... yeah, I'll tone down the tosh– I mean, slang in the future."

"Our Mexican branch really keeping you that busy? Wouldn't want you croaking from overwork, lest we trouble our lawyer some more."

"Then maybe you shouldn't be driving a VW. That Golf passed California emissions tests yet? I know for sure my car doesn't hide its true emission levels." And with that, a signature devilish smile scrawls across his pale, lanky, and very, VERY punchable face.

"At least my car has turn signals", I fire back, falling into the same slime filled trench of kicking the lowest hanging fruit.

"At least mine's rear–wheel drive."

"At least mine goes over 150km/h."

"Mine has a carbon tub."

"Uuuu. Fancy! Can it do 9 laps of Nürb Sprint flat out?"

"At least mine doesn't have the Beetle as its stablemate."

"At least mine has rear seats for adults."

We both smile, and then simultaneously broke down into gentle laughter. This is what Car of the Week is all about, or rather, should have been about.

"I take it you don't like the i3? Only seen you once at a track with it", quips Vic.

"Eh, s'alright. Feels like driving a shot put ball; so much mass concentrated into a disproportionately small area. Car responds nicely to lifting, regen braking really helps the front end bite in. Just that there's a surprising amount of wheelspin from something so slow, just gotta remind myself of all that EV torque. Nice on the road, but my heart and money is already with another car with suicide doors."

"I bet the i3 would whoop your RX-8 around this track."

I shot him a look of total disgust. Things got real, real quick. "Get outta here with that bullcrap. This stupid thing has like, half the power and is almost as heavy."

"You write a lot, but are you all mouth and no trousers?"

"Oh you are SO on." I'm seething and seeing so much red at this point, I completely forgot to ask him what the hell is going on in our Mexican branch. Guess I'll just have to chase him for it.

It's Nismo's turn to pick this week's car, and he's chosen UTTER DISAPPOINTMENT.

Nismonath

Well, im certainly not going to go for the super-ultra-low hanging fruit! 😜

Given PD took the time and effort to fix it, I think it needs a spotlight on how it feels to drive now!
It's the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO '15!

Gran Turismo® 7_20250725233346.png

(I actually really wanted him to pick the Z-tune...)

The GT-R LM Nismo stands perhaps as the single most innovative and daring racecar in modern history, with a front–engine layout that drives the front wheels, slated to be coupled with a hybrid system that would drive the rears. This purportedly freed up a lot of freedom in design and packaging within the LMP1 rules at the time, allowing the LM Nismo to achieve much better aerodynamics than its peers. Unfortunately, technical issues and ill fate both sought to bring down the LM Nismo, and after a dismal finish with none of the three cars achieving a qualified finish, the LM Nismo program was not only shut down, but the LM Nismo itself seemed doomed to be tucked away in the darkest recesses of Nissan history, never to be brought up again.

...until a decade later, that is. In late June, PD dropped Update 1.60 for Gran Turismo 7, and with it came a fix: the hybrid system in the LM Nismo now drove the rear wheels, giving it a new lease of life. With the car functioning much closer to intended now, just how good is it now that it's no longer the figurative one–legged man in an ass kicking contest?
