For the base Carrera models I would go for the 991 as I think it looks best in base trim but I do love the 997 Turbo S and it's GT models so I'd go for the 997 overall.

Original 911 for me. Although it has the least amount of horsepower, it has the best looks IMO and is arguably the most iconic Porsche ever made.

Really torn between the 911 for its elegant beauty and simplicity, and the 997 for really being the ultimate 911 (as of yet) and a sharp-looking car itself. I would prefer the 911 on my favorite backroad, but an AWD 997 would pretty much be the ultimate year-round daily driver sportscar.

The only reason I ended up voting for the 997 is because I figured the 911 would get enough support in the poll.

Hard to decide between Gen 1,3,4, eventually chose Gen 4 as I think it has the best blend of modern looks but with clean lines, plus the gen 4 was the one that gave birth to my favourite 911 the GT3 RS, I think the gen 1 is the best looking GT3 RS as well, especially with the blue stripe and wheels .

They've all got their merits, but it's 964 for me. It's what got me into cars in the first place after seeing one on the way to school in about first grade... at least I think it was a 964, it's not like I would have known back then. Either way, afterwards I got my parents to buy me one of those build-it-yourself models of a 964 and put it together with my older brother. We painted it black. To this day, it's one of my top dream cars.

Am I alone in thinking that the gap between the 60s and 80s first generation is larger than between the 80s first and second generation? Just in terms of the engine sizes 2.0/2.4 Vs 3.0/3.2 vs 3.6
I'd vote for a later first gen

As quickly as car design and tech advances, and it does seem an almost exponential rate, 24 years is an eternity.

Is there a particular reason that the first 5 generations of 911 have been all lumped into 'Generation 1' in this?

The original short wheelbase 911 was produced 1965-1969, which was the first generation 911. This car is refered to as the 'slab side' or short wheelbase 911, and used a dog-leg type 901 transmission that was available as either a 4 or 5 speed.

In 1970, the wheelbase was lengthened and the fenders were flared slightly to accommodate wider wheels, making this the first evolution of the model and altering the lines of the car, which for me would be a second generation. Engine sizes were also increased in this change, and the 901 transmission was replaced with a 5-speed type 915 transmission in all 911s.

In the second half of 1973, the car was updated again, with a more pronounced flare and the rubberized impact bumpers. Engines were also changed to larger units that ran a different injection and induction system to meet tighter regulations. This would be the third-gen 'midyear' car.

In 1978 Porsche introduced a significant alteration to the 911 with the 911SC. Bigger flares (again) went on top of a fully galvanized tub for the first time, and engine size was again increased. The body saw the addition of the 'whale tail' engine cover, which became iconic on this 4th generation 911.

Finally, in 1984 Porsche phased out the SC and replaced it with the 911 Carrera. Engine size was again increased, and the flares were reshaped, remaining nearly the same width but changing contour. This 5th generation car finally changed from the venerable 915 transmission introduced in the second gen car to the G50 unit that it shared with the later 964 and 993 cars.

These are all notably different cars from each other. Seems unfair to lump them all together as '1st Generation' in the poll.

Not sure, ask @Casey, the user who nominated these cars.

Sorry I don't really have a straight forward awnser, since I'm no expert I was only going with what this says.

993 easily, it resembles the original shape but without the sharp edges, plus it kept the original layout of an aircooled engine till it's last days.

997 - the best looking GT3 and RS was the gen.2 car. Especially with the swansong 4.0 Mezger.

First generation, but not for the pre G model pictured; my personal favorite is the 84-89 model years. As I was initially looking at the polling options, along with @HighSeasHoMastr, I was curious as to why the "first generation", the period with arguably the most evolutions of the model, was summed into one option.

I missed the vote, but that's okay, I don't think I can pick a favorite generation. All are equally great to me.

@The87Dodge, you've listed them by Type, for Porsche that isn't a "generation" as they can be concurrent. Anyway... you're missing a Type, the 930 ;)

But 930 only refers to the Turbo (1975-89), so it's not necessarily a type, more like a single model designation.

The Turbo was a Type 930 but that was only one of the 930 models. If you're getting into the models then there are many differing models for some types. Not as many for the 930 (although the flachbau is iconic, imo), but in any case, OP has listed them by Type... so he's still missed one ;)

I supposed if we want to get that technical then also missing are types 923, 934, 935, 953, 954, 959, and 961. All internal codes for various 911s. :p

I liked the 996 the best. I don't know what it is, if it's the RS, RGT, Cup or whatnot. It may not look the best or feel the best to you, but I just love it probably because of the time it was made in. I also like the headlights and taillight son the carrera model.
