I have purchased two different car mounted cameras. One of them is the adrenaline systems Car Cam Sport which I have heard a lot of good things about.
The other is the oregon scientific SD helmet camera. This unit comes with an SD slot.

The adrenaline systems camera is sony 580 tv line ccd which is weatherproof. The oregon scientific does not seem to specify what quality it provides. It also
seems to be waterproof. This camera is not specific for a car but it is pretty cheap in price.

I will be testing them out as soon as I get them. For now, can anyone provide any input on what I should be looking out for?
Are there any pointers I should keep in mind?

I intend to use the camera for some of our weekend street and racetrack racing video. Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know much about cameras and stuff, but I do know that when some of them take a knock, one (sometimes more) of three things tends to happen:

  • the picture gets some lines across
  • the picture stalls
  • the picture disappears altogether
Perhaps you should see which one can take the most vibration without losing picture quality as this might be important when filiming inside a car on a bumpy road, etc.

get it binned, its not all that great especially the sound,it sounds like your underwater and do you have a link to the adrenaline systems Car Cam Sport system?
ideally avoid archos players, look for ether a Solid State Recorder or a Hard Drive one with ANTI SHOCK that is a must for that kind of recorder.Although with these kind of stuff the mics they give you are crap as you can tell from this video.(my friend bought a £1500 set up and the sound was still bad)it will ether sound like this

or this

I use a 520 bullet camera with a PVR-500r recording system and for sound a Mini Tie-Clip Microphone and an Iriver X20.End Result is

best thing ive ever bought!

more info would be useful on the adrenaline system cant seem to find anything on google?

nothing to do with the camera, thats the recorder.

Samsung XC210L

The sound isnt that good, im still working the kinks out on it.

Its weather proof and has taken a blown radiator directly to the (external) camera and it woks fine, 1Hour per GB for regular 640X480, but if you want 720X640, 2GB will only last about an hour.

Total cost is about $400

As far as onboards go, I usually like to see one located so that I can see what the driver's doing. Never really been the kind of guy who enjoys watching the world go by through a windshield: (or over it...I HATE roof cams,) I like to see the struggle of the race.

Only problem with that using bulletcameras is where to mount it.

You can get headrest mounts which would work on your average car but the screws on those are mounted vertical so no use for a bullet camera.
So then you could mount it to the rear windscreen, the only problem with that is bullet cameras mostly use a wideangle then which is useless unless you have it on a really long pole which is what BMI use.

The next idea would be to use a roll cage mount but how many cars do you know which have a full FIA spec roll cage to use one of those mounts,Even bolt in cages dont have a bar going across the rear seats.

So you can ether stick it on the side window.

Or tape it to your helmet

Roof mounted is extremely good as you can watch your lines more clearly and time yourself better.

Where was the microphone for that 'helmet cam' run? Why Is there such a wind noise on boost?

it was placed above the exhaust, first time i had tried it but mainly just got the sound of the air rushing out the exhaust due to,im guessing,it placed directly above it(the mic is also going in that video as it the exhaust was flameing abit and set fire to it

next time i tired it was on a TVR with the mic offset but pointing towards the exhaust as shown here.
