Car radio locked - code MIA.

It's never been locked but thanks to my friend, it got locked due to the battery having died. He thought it's perfectly fine to leave the AC + car radio running whilst waiting at the airport for an hour.

The problem is: he is the most unorganised and dependent person EVER. He doesn't know where the papers for his car are or even the manual. So I'll make him get new papers but I'd like to help him unlock the radio as well. Any ideas? It must be the standard code, the car is a Renault Laguna 2001. Yet, haven't had any luck with google until now. :/
 
Call the dealership.

Hondas are notorious for this, and most places give it out for free (and if you show up in person with the vehicle).

Before you call though check the glove box. At the dealership I work at we put a sticker on the side of the glove box (not where you put stuff in but on the outside) and a second sticker with it in the manual.
 
Right, I'll tell him to check - I'm curious if the local dealer is willing to help him since he purchased the car somewhere else, some years ago. Guess what, he can't even remember the name of the dealership, despite it being in his hometown. >_>

On the bright side...it's a Renault and we're in France. Can't be too difficult...can it?

NooooOOOOooooOOOOo don't call the dealer. The dealer will charge an arm and a leg to unlock a radio. Ford quoted me £40 to unlock mine. Googled "Ford radio code" and found a site that would provide the code if you posted the serial number on there - whick was easily found by using a set of £2 tools.

You got ripped by your dealer then, I wouldn't go back to them if they want to charge you for a radio code.

That's awful, free here. This happened to my uncle with his VW and it was free.
 
Thanks everyone - we actually called the brother-in-law of a friend and he knew some codes. He's actually working for Renault, so yeah...should've thought about that earlier. :D

Really common over here, to the point where there are websites setup to tell you how to unlock your radio without having to pay a dealer to do it.
