Car remote

My dad owns a 1999 Ford Escort Sedan, and I think the remote key (the thing you can unlock doors and the trunk with) has a broken circuit because we tried changing the battery to no luck. Just wondering, do we have any cheaper after market options because I know a Ford dealership will rob us blind.
